To me developers became masters of 2D the day they made this, in 1996. No game survived more the test of time than these

 

 

Metal slug sprites also have possibly the best animation in the business, outside of 2d fighters.

The sprite sheets for these are just mindblowing. True achievements.

I dislike "graphic kings" for that

15 years later those things are still impressive - that's like a century in video game time. Not so much most graphic kings when they are realistic...

*btw, that alien is from SNK vs Capcom 2, look how even it is less impressive than the Metal Slug ones - but it's still great sprite work.
