Graphics may not be similar to that of new age Zelda, but 3D Dot Game Heroes I felt did a fine job emulating old school Zelda style gameplay. Of course it was lacking some things, but I would find that to be a good starting point.

I would love a New Legend of Zelda to be based off a graphics style like that.

Have you seen or tried it yet?

By the way, I need to read this entire article. I feel like I will agree with much of it.

I haven't played it, but of course I know of its existence and that it was an homage to the classic Zelda games. This type of game, just like Super Mario Bros., didn't stop selling because consumers had no interest anymore. It stopped selling, because it wasn't made anymore. And if anyone suggests that Nintendo shouldn't try, because a game of another company that had flaws didn't sell a million copies, they need to be smacked. Although I disagree with you on the artstyle, a New Legend of Zelda should have a look that resembles the old games, 3D dots would make it look like some crazy experiment. It's okay for 3D Dot Game Heroes, because it was a new IP.

Of course, if a proper New Legend of Zelda gets made and sells well (which it should), the naysayers are going to say that it did so because of nostalgia. But isn't that why a game like Skyward Sword sells? Because people hope to get another Ocarina of Time.

I fully understand when you say that it would look like an experiment since originally that is all 3DDGH was, which was a concept made by one guy in a short period of time and overall was no more than a 9-10 month project. I just wanted to point out that it is something I would love personally, although the original point was that I think that even if it were 3D, I think a 3/4 top down adventure title could work in today's day and age.

I for one have been a big supporter of having a Zelda game similar to that of the NES.

Your last paragraph by the way is 100% spot on. Most games that people beg for release are based entirely on nostalgia. Smartphones for example, one of the big sellers in terms of adventure titles is Zenonia and that games plays like Zelda and Secret of Mana. So come on Nintendo, bring on New Legend of Zelda 3DS!

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
