While it's a matter of taste more than anything, I agree that I think quality songs are few and far between in mainstream music these days. Which just shows my bias. 
But I never really listen to radio, I just look around every now and again if I want to find new music. And epic music can certainly still be found!
One of my favorite groups (started by two brothers and ended last year when one of them died) is E. S. Posthumus.
You still have bands who make popular music who know how to make music I would consider high quality. Coldplay do this quite nice in my opinion. 
Kamelot is a personal favorite of mine as well, and although they started in the early 90's, they've made some awesome music in the 2000's as well.
