Yes, motion control is a huge reason, but being able to have a group of four people being simultaneously involved is what makes it such a party machine.  Waiting your turn just isn't as fun


Just how many wii owners went out and bought 3 more wii-mote? Wii was cheap but not if you had to buy 3 more wii-motes.

The most played wii-sport games in my family  are "waiting your turn" like bowling and golf. Wit-fit board is also "waiting your turn" since most wii fit owner would only have one board.

I still only own two wiimotes, but I have certainly played games that require four at my house... because either the company I have over has one, or a neighbor down the street does.
