Visceral are very talented so I'd imagine EA won't want to lose them. Making new gaming IP's that EA themselves wholly own is quite simply something they've never had, and so even if it takes 5 years for Dead Space, Dante's Inferno etc to establish themselves as incredibly profitable big-sellers then it's a price worth paying, and I'm sure EA budgeted in that way. It's very common for companies not to expect a profit on a game until it's second or third iteration - once brand name is bigger and costs are reduced.

I've no idea whether we can call any of their games profitable yet or not anyway, too much guesswork involved and assumptions. Nothing set the sales charts on fire but new IP's typically don't.

Uh no that isn't very common in fact this generation is the first time anything like that has happened, in the past it's always been "oh this game not only made us a profit it sold half a million copies, should we make a sequel?" it just didn't happen that companies bet the farm on a unproven series or an iffy series, which is why EA has lost millions, and many companies are out of business right now cause most of them weren't EAs size where they could lose millions and continue to produce games.
