Gamers and high end power users will be most appreciative of the difference. Netbook users, and those who just use computers as text pads, and internet surfing will probably be find with unbuntu, or anything else cheap.
You do get what you pay for though, and if you want your computer to have high end functionality, you need a modern OS, and Win7 is the best/only choice for gaming after DX11.
