Same thing for the harem animes. might be cool if you were the guy every girl was after, but no one ever actually gets any play in those, and a side character doesn't even get into those erotic-yet-wacky situations that make it so much fun.
then of course there's stuff like Darkwing duck and Talespin, mighty max and the like, but those still have the issues where the average people are just average people, except they get attacked by monsters and pirates and supervillians and crap.
Now if you got to end up as a "main" character in whichever cartoon you're talking about, I'd probably go with Ranma 1/2, kick-ass silly martial arts and a little love comedy make for a great mix, but if that wasn't the case, I'd actually go for Pokemon. With Pokemon, EVERYBODY has the damn things, so even being a minor character in that anime would come with some decent benefits.
