If I was the head of Sony I would start bombarding the United States with ads heading into the Holiday season targetted to different demographics according to the channel and programming on, playing up casual games and kid friendly games and games that help learning on the kids networks where the parents watch, on the movie channels and premium channels I would almost souly play up the Blu-Ray and movie download features, on music channels I would play up the ability to use it as a music player for your house connected to your computer, on Comedy Central or G4 I would show the most hard core of games I had at the moment.

Sony needs to get all the different demographics interested in the different aspects of their systems. They need to make Soccer moms look at it as a place their kids can play fun games, they need the technophiles to see it as a great multimedia device and they need the hardcore to see it as a great place for games. So far they are only aiming at the gamers.

Also I would continue the HDTV bundle deals they were playing with. Using my already massivly successful Bravia line to push the PS3 into more homes. They now have a Blu-Ray player and an HDTV, you will get Blu-Ray purchases.

I would also do a promotion that people with PS2s that trade them in get a certain number of dollars off their PS3 purchase. This gets them into the PS3 family, and it gets rid of that damned PS2, forcing them to buy and play PS3 games. Furthering my entertainment division.

No seriously, Sony needs to hire me.

I agree with your suggestions., but for the ps2 part to work , they should put the BC back.

I think the ps2 market is the most ripe for new ps3 buyers. They know the brand and liked, but they are probably scared by the price and the perspective of loosing their 20 ps2  games library. I would also produce a cheaper sku, without the blu-ray drive, but with the capacity of upgarding it later. While the hw would be capable of processing bluray quality, the driver would be cheaper. For that aspect to work, you could put movies for sale in the PSN, preferably at HOME, like you go to the cinema inside HOME and pay a rent for 1 or two days, or buy the movie. I would also put a lot of work to improve PSN product offer and connection, providing a peripheral to improve it.

ABout the HD, I would launch extra hd sizes to install in the skus, so you could buy a cheaper sku and than upgrade it, cause usually peopla buy laptop hd, so sony don´t profit from it. The x360 strategy is to sell the cheapest sku and then force people to upgrade it to have a decent game experience. So now that they got a price cut, they seem to have the cheapest console, but they don´t. You have at least to buy the intercooler, that at Amazon costs some $20 average(http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=intercooler+%2B+x360). Plus another pad, a hdmi cable, pay $50 for live, etc. I know ps3 also require a pad and hdmi, but only the 40gb. So would be nice for the console sales if they strip the ps3 and sold separatelly, but still offers the whole package at a higher price. The thing is, it got to expand it´s user base now, so the games, wich sustain a plataform, can sell for a long time and sell well.
