They were a year late and $100 more expensive with the purpose just to have the more powerful system this generation. (interview with Phil Spencer confirming 2016 scorpio)

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/295830/QA_With_Scorpio_rising_Phil_Spencer_looks_to_the_future_of_Xbox.php

It's not likely they'd spend extra cash in R&D and sacrifice a year of sales for the lolz.

I expect the same mindset next generation. If I had to put money on a company having the more powerful system, it would be MS.

I'm still not convinced either way though. Simply too early to call.

Are you saying they might launch later just to make sure they have best specs and not increase any cost?

---> No. I'm saying why would they bother with the extra year of R&D costs plus potential loss of sales only to make the same mistake next generation? It makes absolutely no sense.  Xbox has been here for 3 generations now. Each one they've had the superior console. At best, the ps3 and 360 were a tie. Ps3 was theoretically more powerful but 3rd party games ran worse most of the generation. One X and og xbox are quite above their respective PlayStation comrades.  Xbox having the weaker hardware is the exception, not the rule.

Yes Xbox original were stronger than PS2, as it launched several years later.

PS3 is stronger than X360 no question, show by single party titles and by late gen multiplatforms.

PS4 is stronger than X1. X1X came much later and didn't affect the landscape at all. So if you want to have math PS4 stayed stronger than X1 for much longer than X1X is stronger than PS4Pro (and that also costed a year more to launch, higher price tag and lower sales).

I don't think it matters much at all to MS. Their strategy is Cloud gaming and PC gaming, and I would estimate the XBox will be disassociated from consoles. One X shows that MS is not willing to make exclusive games for the most powerful console, instead they release PC  and cloud versions of all the great xbox console exclusives.

Sony clearly believes that there is a demand for "next gen console", but in order to succeed, they need to have the exclusives games. Just like Nintendo has demonstrated over the years, hardware performance is not the whole story.

@Donferari
I admit its all asumptions based on nothing but rumors. I only think it possible cuz they are so far behind that they could only think of eating some cost just to try and catch up.

Dont think it matters anyways. They are stuck on cloud and gamepass. So unimpresive free to play looking exclusives that arent even real exclusives as they will release on almost everything but ps consoles.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

@ permalite
I dont know what makes you say that about red gaming tech. I belive he is mostly pc. And he reviews pc components mostly.

@konkari
Yea they are leaving the console space. Their latest game realeses points that out. I think they need a big hoora to leave some impact to then step on it to advertise their cloud and gamepass on everything and abandon xbox.

Hey man, I think it is totally fair you thinking MS will do all possible to have the most powerful console. The reply was just that the way you phrased it seemed like they could be sure.

I don't think MS is really worried about having the most powerful system. They seem to be shifting towards their gaming services.

Even if they are trying to have the most powerful console, I doubt they are interested in subsidizing it much. They didn't for the XBO or XBO X. And they sure as hell didn't for the Xbox SAD.  I think they might eat $50 or so of the cost, but I think Sony will be willing to eat $100-$150.

And considering bulk sales and that PS5 could be selling twice more than Xb4 I would say that Sony sub 150 vs MS 50 they could both be same price with PS5 being much more powerful. It is easier to eat cost and reduce cost within 24 months than to review the HW to have it more powerful =p

They are though. I just posted an interview with Phil Spencer where he confirms that he had a 2016 X1X to go head to head with the pro. They held off and released a more expensive version.

They obviously wanted the most powerful console to release only a year and a half ago. Why would that mentality from the Xbox team change now? Because of some misplaced navi rumours? Unlikely.

PS5 could indeed end up being more powerful. It isn't because Sony Co-developed Navi. This rumour needs to be put to bed.
