So you're saying the 9th gen has begun, and that Nintendo decided when it would happen?  But what if, hypothetically, a Switch successor comes in 2-3 years--only one year after the other consoles?  This is the danger of letting one console define the generations.

I can ask nonsense questions too.  What if Sony rips all of the PS4's off of the shelves, releases the PS5, and then declares the PS5 as the true successor to the PS3?  What then?

(This question has no reasonable answer, as does yours.)

That won't happen but if it happen, it is next gen because it is ps5 (name after ps4) and then the next Xbox/New Switch can come out too. Switch at the moment is a mid gen system or current gen.

Soooo basically Halo 3 sold twice as quickly as Smash did?

Still impressive but this handicaps the real competition for #1 spot. Now it's guaranteed.

Halo 3 did 3.3m in 12 days, Smash 3m in 11 days, pretty even.

Actually more than 3m.

I made the point that i didn't like (whoever actually says it) reading a PR saying X console is the fastest selling consoles against Y and Z without any kind of context,

For some balance, NPD has stated many times that PS4 was "still the best selling console of the year" regardless of who won that month.  And this month is no exception.

"Overall, hardware spending was up 3% year-over-year to $3.9 billion, with the Nintendo Switch's sales growth helping offset declines on other platforms. The Switch led hardware sales [read: revenue] this past month, but the PS4 remains at the top in year-to-date sales."

Believe me spokentruth, everything you said the other day is right, i don't want to sound negative or biased against Nintendo. But my point still remains and i still don't know how to explain myself correctly.

I guess that i see it like a endurance motorsport race, like 24h of Le mans, where car A and B are neck to neck, A is ahead, and then A goes to box and spend 1 minute changing drivers and B then goes to 1st place. And then in that moment, the News on TV have a in live update of the state of the the race and the anchor ask the comentator of the race who is winning and the commentator then says...."Driver B is the fastest in the race", but he kwows he still has to stop in the pits and the moment he does, car A will regain the 1st place,  but he adds nothing more. Then the emision with TV news ends and a few laps later, car B enters in box and A regains the 1st place, but then, there is no news update in the situation, and the audience of the news follow their lives that day with the info that Car B is winning the race.

I see the same with Switch and PS4/XBO because the launch alignments are not the same because one launched in march and the others in november, so when one is benefiting the holiday season the other is not and viceversa. PS4 can spent 9 months of the year ahead launch aligned but then, each year in Decmeber Switch surpass PS4 and becomes the fastest in the same period of time. And don't get me wrong, Nintendo is doing perfectly announcing that, they have to do it in fact. The problem, from my opinion is that a 3rd party allows to give their name to be used for an information for the benefit of  one of their consumers without demanding any context to the situation.

It's like when a few weeks earlier, NPD said that XBO and PS4 were leading the growth this year in USA. In that situation, Swith was the one harmed by that out of context info given by NPD. I did not liked that then either, because despite being true, it wasn't telling the right story in my opinion, and that was, that XBO was still the 3rd in sales, Switch was second and the holiday season, when Switch is better was still to come.

In the last few years, i have the impression that these PR from companies are becoming more a more ambiguous to create more discussion so NPD threads al over the internet become more relevant, but from my perspective, we are losing actual info in the process, we already don't know unit sales from consoles anymore, and from videogames that happened long ago. I just wished that we cold have actual numbers without the need to spend countless word trying to figure out the meaning of the numbers....

Thing is that in the same time frame of the switch, PS4 and XOne already had 2 holiday seasons. Switch is in the middle of it's second holiday and is already leading. That means that Switch is in fact the fastest selling console, already, leading and having half a holiday season left.

So now is the only relevant time to compare Switch to PS4/Xone because of the same number of holidays seasons for the three hardwares.

It's crystal clear that PS4 will take the lead again once it enters it's third holiday season while the switch will be in April of it's third year. Then we'll have to wait december 2019, in order for the switch to enter it's third holiday season to compare if it's selling better or worse than PS4.

But then I can argue you that ps4 wasted its launch sales launching at the same time period as holiday sales, because I'm pretty sure ps4 would have sold 3-4m in March 2013 too and the had its first holiday sales later, or that if ps4 spent most ot the year ahead launch aligned why is most important the 2 or 3 months switch is ahead, etc. The discussion can go either way are every one could be right, that's why you need context when you reach milestones.

When the numbers benefit ps4 we need the same context too. That's my only point.

So... 3m in 11 days, which likely means 5m+ shipped in US first month. In Japan it did 1.6m so far (without digital). Shipped + digital should be at least 2.5m by the end of the year. Then we have Europe + RotW, which should be at least at 3m shipped + digital by the end of December, so that would put Smash at least at 10.5m shipped during its first month. Great, let's see how much more it'll end up doing when Nintendo reveals their figures later next month.

Btw, I'm mostly impressed at Super Mario Party. It's possible for it to ship 5m on its first quarter. If that's the case, it will definitely end up being the best selling Mario Party so far. Switch keep being good for Nintendo's IPs. Now, I wonder how Animal Crossing will perform when it comes out next year. Hopefully it breaks records too.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

An Smashing hit  Nintendo won, the ONHs (Obsessed Nintendo Haters) are shook.

Pokemon Let's be Reductive did well too.

Whew lads, this thread was a trip to read. Had me in stitches multiple times.

Anyway, congrats on the great performance, Nintendo. You truly released the ultimate Smash.
