Overall

"Although down this month, May sales reflect the third best-selling May on record after May '08 and May '09."

"The 360 platform, across hardware, software, and accessories, contributed the greatest share of revenue to industry sales for the month, and year-to-date."

"The PS3 platform has enjoyed the greatest percentage growth, with platform sales across hardware, software, and accessories up 32% for the month, and 28% year-to-date."

Hardware

"The portable hardware category contributed the most to the decline in hardware sales for the month, yet the NDS is the best-selling hardware system for May."

"Console hardware unit sales are, in fact, flat to last year. Declines in sales result from a lower average selling price this year compared to last."

"Compared to April, both the PS3 and the 360 platforms realized a unit sales increase in hardware."

Software

"Red Dead Redemption was the best-selling game for the month, achieving sales of 1.5 million units across both platforms. The game garnered spectacular review scores and in its first month at retail it has exceeded the lifetime sales of its predecessor, Red Dead Revolver, which was released in May 2004."

"May was the 10th consecutive month of year-over-year software sales increases for the PS3 platform. Combined with the hardware and accessories sales increases for the platform, the PS3 has really hit its stride."

"In May, 8 of the top 10 SKU's for the month were new releases, which was the case with March 2010 as well. When more of the top selling games are new releases, it pushes up the average selling price for software overall, positively contributing to total revenues."

"We have started to measure the consumer spend outside the physical new retail channel. During E3, NPD reported that in 2009, there was an additional consumer spend in the range of $4.5 to $4.75 billion on games content via these other vehicles including used, rental, subscriptions and digitally-delivered content. Our Games Acquisition Monitor and other consumer tracking services will continue to provide clients insight into these other avenues of consumer spend on games content. Moving forward, we plan to release a limited amount of this information into the public domain, either quarterly or semi-annually."

"Another measure of the increasing importance of the digital world is reflected in the percent of sales comprised by online capable games. For May year-to-date, 43% of total software units sold were online capable, as compared to 37% for the same time frame last year."

Accessories

"For the third consecutive month, the top-selling accessory item for the month is the Xbox Live 1600 point card. Video game points and subscriptions cards unit sales are up 12% on a year-to-date basis as compared to the same time period in 2009."

Not bad for the ps3 at all :S not sure why the doomzed statements are for

WoW MS must be happy. With the slim, Halo Reach, Fable III and Kinect in the pipeline, things will only get better.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

It's easy to talk about growth when you are working off of a very low base.

I don't get it..in it's strongest region the xbox has around 40k lead...both the xbox and ps3 had an increase of 20k or so...ps3 was 130k vs xbox 175k a gap of 45k last year...the gap has decreased and that is also not a 'very' low base...if then the xbox had a low base also..

or am I misunderstanding something here?

When did the black Wii drop?  Is that in here?  Or is that June?

360 sales going to dip for June and then have a healthy July spike.

PS3 didn't make much headway in the U.S. with their huge late winter/early Spring software lineup did it?  Really thought they'd be stronger comparatively in this time, especially with May 360 buyers having a possible redesign or price drop on the horizon leading into E3 time.

Um, I dunno, the price cuts and slim took effect just after the 13th, midway through. I expect a healthy bump in JUNE NPD.

I was thinking the Slim would count toward July.  I guess it was mid-June.  My summer's flying by - - lost all sense of time and space. :)

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

I honestly thought RDR would of sold better on the PS3 due to the exclusive content (I expected a situation like Dante's Inferno in which PS3 outsold 360 due to exclusive content).

Just want to play good games

I guess Microsoft must be pretty pleased. 1600 points is $40 right? They are really kicking butt with their online game market place.

Anyway like always its a pretty fantastic month for Nintendo and Microsoft looks like they are heading into a strong June/July. I suspect Sony probably cannot catch a break in this market, the Xbox 360 lead is simply too strong.

1600 points is $20.

Yes, you are misunderstanding two things:

1) What I was refering to is the YoY growth of the PS3 you mentioned in the post I responded to. Before the Slim and price cut the PS3 was doing terrible in 2009, so it's no surprise at all that it's up YoY at this point.

2) "The gap has decreased.", that goes only for the gap by which the PS3 gets outsold by the 360 monthly. In overall sales though, the 360's lead is still growing, so the gap is increasing every month. Sony just doesn't lose by as much as they used to, that's all.

Less worse than they used to is still = a good thing

I said that to a comment saying the ps3 is doing 'horribly' on HW which is BS....it's doing just fine, with almost no major exclusive releases it still has an increase YoY, no matter what the reason is, it's not a horrible, it's actually good

I just think that the 'analysts' sometimes jump the gun here...NPD themselves said the ps3 has increased healthily...so the bottom line is NO, it's not selling HORRIBLY in it's weakest region
