Hey,
BD Drive is cheap, take a look at internet shops... it will cost no more tahm 90 bucks... comes with manual for you to do all maintence.

yes but that means he will get no futher sony support for his ps3 in the future, that is not a recommended move.

What in the world, why would Sony not offer support if he fixed it himself out of warranty?

Thats like having a car/truck and doing I duno say your shocks or something yourself but then your transmission goes

and your local dealership says nope we wont fix it because you did the shocks....

the BR drive is very easy to remove/replace If you can get the top off the PS3 its going to take about 2 minutes to remove the old one and put the new one in.  Before that maybe try a lens cleaner disc for blu-ray drives.

no they are more likely to charge you the next time you report a fault. old ps3's are more prone to failing, so i would not risk it that is all... he may well get a fee fix from sony, other guy's have, so i cannot see why not.

as for the backwards compatibility it's not that big of a deal i had it too once, did not really use it as still has my ps2 (to other people it might be more important tho)

it's the future of handheld

Around the Network

No... its $190 repair from sony. No free repair on any 60gb they are all at least 2 years ol.

Well I finally got around to calling Sony (had to go back to college) and said they couldn't do the repair with out a charge of 178$ to fix or 149$ to exchange it with another newer system. Also they said could have done the repair free of charge if the warranty was only out of effect for a few months.

So I will just get one off ebay for parts and fix it myself.

Thanks everyone for the help and useful links.

Good luck with that. Don't forget, Youtube has tons of tutorials on how to replace the drive. Just make sure you watch the ones for the older PS3.
