FFXIII Devs Took Inspiration From Modern Warfare 2, Halo, Dragon Age And Fallout

Square-Enix are the masters of RPG, they’ve been doing it longer than almost any other developer in the gaming industry. The vote is unanimous, they are the best and have created some of the most memorable experiences in RPG history. But that’s not to say the veterans don’t take ideas from other sources, indeed, one would be a fool think he knows everything.

Square-Enix are not fools, the culmination of many different ideas always breeds innovation, success and inspiration; and in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy XIII creator Motomu Toriyama, spoke of some of the games that gave them inspiration for this particular title, FFXIII.

“We did actually take a look at games like BioWare’s, and Fallout as well,” he said. “But rather than that, we took more inspiration from FPS games like Call of Duty and Halo. Those games seems to present a very real-time, tense atmosphere on the battlefield where the player gets involved in the fighting. That’s the kind of thing that we looked at more intensely.”

You might remember that around the time Final Fantasy XIII was being launched in Japan (December 17th 2009), Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk, stirred up passions when he uttered that Japanese RPGs “kept delivering the same thing over and over” instead of moving the genre forward like western RPGs have.

It’s a touchy subject and one that needs to be examined with care, but one must admire Square-Enix for looking at other franchises, even shooters, to created a better experience for gamers.

Ahh! When did you Pre-order it? If you show them your receipt they'll give it to you I think. I did that when I Pre-ordered Uncharted 2 and I didn't get the Pre-order bonus. I went back a week later and they let me have it with no problems.

I pre-ordered the game back around when Uncharted 2 was launched. What exactly is it they gave you? Like a guide for a level or something?

Took the following from Amazon.com

Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) - #2
PlayStation 3 Console - #3
Final Fantasy XIII (X360) - #29

Just took another look at it. It seems its a guide for the first 3 or 4 Chapters of the game, I guess its to help out people that aren't familiar with Final Fantasy or RPG's. I guess Square Enix is really trying to market the game as best as possible.
