Forums - Sony Discussion - How would you rate the Xenosaga series?

In celebration of the revealing of Xenoblade, I decided to make thread about what people thought about the Xenosaga series as a whole to build up hype (I'm gonna do one for Xenogears later). For me, I'd give the series a good 9/10. Here is how I would rate the episodes within the series

Xenosaga: Episode 1 - 9.5, I thought it was fantastic. It had an awesome storyline, great music, introduced some interesting characters and a great combat system. The ending was really awesome as well. The graphic at the time was even better then FFX's graphics. It was really something.

Xenosaga: Episode 2 - 8.0, It had an awesome storyline and awesome graphics though the cutscenes were really long (I love long cutscene but I can see how alot of people can hate it), and the combat system was below average. It was really hard too, I got really pissed off playing it. They also got rid of Mitsuda as the composer.

Xenosaga: Episode 3 - 9.0, It had an awesome storyline, the character designs in this game were the best out of the 3, the combat system was great (especially the gear battles though the regular battles were not as good as they were in Xenosaga: Episode 1), fantastic graphics (I'd say it was on per if not better then Final Fantasy 12's graphics) and it is home to one of the most surprising plot twists I've seen in a jrpg. Shion really pissed me off in this game though with her ignorance, therefor I dropped the rating by 5 points (It would have been a 9.5 if it wasn't for her).

So, how would you rate the Xenosaga series?

Around the Network

Overall: 8.5
Xenosaga: I LOVED this game. It had this really eerie sci-fi feel and somehow flawlessly blended it with my kind of fantasy genre. If there were any issues, it'd be the terribly long cutscenes, but it compensated with a fantastic soundtrack. The battle music was incredible, and I wasn't bothered at all by the fact that it didn't change until the final boss. I loved the battle system, and all the sweet tech attacks. Last Symphony, Rain Blade, and the X-Buster were the best. 9.5/10

Xenosaga II: Words cannot describe my disappointment with this one; what DMC2 was to DMC. To be honest, I didn't really have any idea what was going on in it. The battle system was confusing and took me a while to get used to. And with the exception of chaos, the new voice acting was terrible. Also, some of characters looked a bit uglier than what they were in the first game. Mainly the girls. Maybe it's my fetish for big eyes. 6.5/10

Xenosaga III: Definitely a step up from II, but it really lacked the presentation that the first had. The battle system improved itself, but from annoying to boringly straightforward. I had hoped that the special attacks would make up for this, but the vast majority lacked any inspiration. But I liked the one where Ziggy blasts an enemy in the face, that was funny. Music was okay; story was very impressive and wrapped up nicely. I almost cried during the ending with Jin and Shion. 8/10

Currently playing: Marvel vs. Capcom 3, League of Legends

Overall 7/10, it really didn't have the same effect on me that Xenogears had.

I was really fun and original, II was crap, and i hear III is the best.

Xenosaga: Episode I - 8.5 - I found the story for the first half of the game boring, but it picked up after that. Albedo is one of the best antagonists I've seen in a JRPG. The battle system was fun. Music was good too, but I was a little upset the battle theme was the same for normal & boss battles. One thing I didn't like was no map. In the beginning, you are told to go to this room with no map, so you're basically wasting your time running around looking for the room. This happened a lot in the first few hours.

Xenosaga: Episode II - 7.5 - Story was fantastic. Music was generic. I didn't like some of the new voice-overs, and Kos-Mos looked hideous. The battle system wasn't as fun as the previous, but I still enjoyed it. It didn't have those flashy tech attacks. The battle load times were ridiculous. The characters were loaded individually, and the game was difficult. Also, normal battles were lengthy; it normally took more than 5 minutes to beat one. Despite those complaints, I liked Xenosaga 2. It's better than most JRPGs I've played.

Xenosaga: Episode III - 9.0 - Best story out of the three; the ending felt rushed though. The battle system was pretty good, but not as fun as Xenosaga I.

Overall:  8.5

Boring/10. In the first hour you get to play about ten minutes, at most, then it goes back into another very long series of dialoges. How anyone can get past that when the story is obviously dreck is amazing. If I wanted a good story I can name hundreds of books or dozens of movies that are better. If I wanted a good game I can name hundreds that destroy Xenosaga. How this trash still gets so much praise amazes me.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Xenosaga - 9 - Great story and battle system. The mechs (A.E.U.Gs?) were pretty boring though. Card Battle Minigame!

Xenosaga II - 8.5 - Cinematics were amazing, but the battle system was terrible IMO. I was also glad they changed the character models.

Xenosaga III - 9.5 - Best story and plot execution. character battles weren't that great, but the mech battles were amazing. And I could finally buy stuff again.

They didn't hold a candle to Xenogears though.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Fairly entertaining series, but overall disappointing compared to Xenogears.

Here is another problem with Xenosaga, it just didn't live up to Xenogears' AWESOMENESS. Xenogears set many people (including myself) expectations too high for Xenosaga. Its damn near impossible to create a jrpg at Xenogears' caliber. It was bound to fail for many. The series was still awesome, but Xenogears is WORLDS APART better then it.

Man, they should have never got rid of Mitsuda for the 2nd and 3rd episodes. He is such a genius.
