Echoing other comments, I know, but it sounds like a problem with the HDMI cable given your description (especially since many are pretty poorly made); however, it could be a faulty HDMI slot on your PS3. If reversing the cable results with the same symptoms, I'd suggest it was the PS3, not the cable, so I'd contact Sony and get them to fix it. It'll be covered by the guarantee.
