Patcher has said some stupid things but they were completely reasonable in that video. Uncharted and more so Killzone 2 should have sold more. Why is it that Gears of War manages 6 million as a new IP but the PS3's two biggest games won't? I'm not really sure maybe it marketing or competition or a console with a diverse base. Whatever the reasons Sony's big games aren't selling as huge this generation as they did last.

this isnt all the way true.. SONY developed games minus GT have NEVER been big sellers.

I know but why not? Why was the xbox able to create some phenomenal sellers on a 24 million install base but Sony hasn't? Whats keeping Sony games from taking off and selling 5 or 10 million plus?

@CGI

I was more going along the lines of new IP's. Of course we know that established IP's like GT are going to sell. But why hasn't Uncharted, Killzone (not a new IP but total reinvention of franchise), LBP, Resistance, Infamous or any other new PS3 title exploded in sales? Don't get me wrong they have sold well but were talking about mega blockbusters here. Besides GT what other Sony exclusive do you think is going to get past 5 million? Do you think GT or any other exclusive will get past 10 million?

I don't know maybe its the recession or maybe the competition is just a lot tougher this time around?

I think Uncharted 2 sales were a little dissapointing for the most climed game of the gen

yea they are very dissapointing..

American sales, are just over 900K, that isn't bad, but that isn't amazing either.. World wide 2.7-2.9 million, is very good, but for the game that won GAME OF THE YEAR everywhere basically, claimed to be one of the best console experinces on the market, and add to that the fact that the game is said to be one of the most beautiful games ever made visually.. 2.7 million compared to 10 million from another MARIO game or any Wii (insert title) game.. really really makes me feel sorry for sony.

They try so hard, to have people ignore there efforts.. and just go with w.e everyone else is doing.

Dude, the sales bashing on the Wii is getting old.

Yes, Uncharted won Game of the Year in many places, but the fact is, not everyone wants to buy it. It's on the lowest selling console in America, and as polished as it is, it's not as if it offers an experience you can't already find on competing consoles. Mario deserves its sales, I don't see people disappointed with it (see user reviews, those are what really counts), and it has virtually no competition.

Look at the Gamecube's sales. Metroid Prime has a higher metacritic than Uncharted 2, yet it couldn't even manage 3 million. Still, as long as these games meet (or exceed) expectations, we'll continue to get more, and that's really all that counts. Hell, Uncharted 2's sales are great, I don't even see why people are complaining about it.

These expectations of higher sales just because a niche group like us forumgoers or game reviewers enjoy it, needs to die. Nobody in any other industry expects similar results, why does it persist in videogames?

heres my piece: I believe rgat continue to create games that huge appeal to the PS fanbase, Uncharted, Infamous, Mag and Killzone.. they seem more XBOX orientated..myself and lots of other PS fans dont like shooters but XBOX fanbase does which its why shooters are a goldmine on XBOX its its bread and butter

Quite simple, because Killzone 2 nor Uncharted 2 are the PS3's biggest games. Gran Turismo, God of War III & FF Versus XIII will show you what that fanbase goes for.

THIS ^^^^

Gears of War was a launch title heavily advertised this = to 5M+ sales... look at Resistance, without much advertising, the game sold 3.5M copies.

This is one of the reasons Nintendo went with the wii-concept. Sony is probably gonna do the same.
Like Nintendo in the past, they push 'hardcore' games and get not so good sales. Then what are you supposed to do? Go casual, if you ask me.

Uncharted 2 the game of the year sells 900K

while the latest wii mini game compilation sells 4-6 million copies

it is a disaster darth, face it.

What are you talking about?  VG Chartz says that Uncharted 2 has sold over 2.7 million copies.  The thing Pachter said is interesting though, and asks a question of what sort of attach rate should Uncharted 2 have?  Should 25% of all owners of the PS3 buy the game?  Maybe people aren't all into movie experience on the PS3.  Maybe the audience is more diverse.  And there is a basic reality that people want to play what they want to play.  People want what they play to be of high quality.  But, I don't know anyone who plays "high quality" as an attribute unto itself.

Well, in truth Microsoft hasn't put out a new IP that exploded in sales either. This is why i don't get why Sony is judged so harshly while Micorsoft is praised in that area.

For me though, I prefer a plethora of games that are quality and fun, to one that just sells 10 million or so.

True there aren't many exclusive games on the 360 that have sold 5 million plus, only three that I can think of right off the top of my head. But what I don't understand is why the huge difference between the way GoW sold versus say Uncharted 2 and more closely Killzone 2. All three games were praised for their graphics, had amazing reviews and were exclusives. So whats the big difference between them?

If you look at a lot of 360 exclusives like L4D and ME they have PC counterparts. I think if those didn't exist you would see a lot of these games selling around 5 million too. Although thats completely speculation on my part. Just to clarify I'm not saying that Uncharted is a disappointment I'm just asking why didn't its sales explode? I'm especially baffled about Killzone 2, I expected it to have amazing legs and to do GoW numbers.

@XXain

So do you think they will get better results if they turn back to their original fanbase and start making the games they want?

@warmachine

CGI said everything I was going to. Plus GoW was not a launch title. It was advertised pretty well though.

                      The definitive evidence that video games turn people into mass murderers

Thinking of the really big sellers this generation I think I may have an explanation for what sets the mega blockbusters apart from the good seller, and this applies to all consoles.

Looking at the best sellers especially on the Wii and 360 I see one common aspect. Split screen/local multi-player.

Both GoW and Halo have split-screen co-op and multiplayer as well as LAN abilities. Mario Kart Wii, NSMB Wii, SSBB, all these games have some form of local multiplayer. When your friends come over to play you play Halo 3 or Brawl because their one of the few games that still let you sit next to your friend and play.

If you want to make a huge seller you need a game with amazing gameplay, single player, co-op, online multiplayer and split screen.

Unfortunately these are missing in a lot of the PS3 exclusives. Not to say single player games don't sell but it seems to be almost impossible to pull off the mega blockbuster this gen with a single player only game.
