Forums - Gaming Discussion - Game Resolutions - List of unusual resolution next-gen games

I saw Griffen's post on the COD4 resolution being 600P and it reminded me of a list I had made a few months ago about game resolutions. These are PS3 and 360 only, since the Wii is not branded as an HD machine.

It's surprising how many fall short of 720P. I'd like to make a more complete list, so if you know of any confirmed resolutions, please post them.

I've sort of been collecting this information for a little while from a few sources. Most of this info is from the Beyond3D forums - particularly Quaz51's posts.

Around the Network

The things is that resolution takes up the frame buffer, since there are more pixels to manage. It may seem obvious, but many of the rendering tricks have to use all those pixels to help the graphics, and more pixels just means more work, and less of the frame buffer to use for other things (this applies to both systems).

Thus higher native resolution is actually a detriment to the best graphics. Unlike FMVs, where the detail is in the frames, games have their detail in the textures, which will still be HD, even if the screen resolution is low.

So just upscale them all, I say.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Take a look at this picture to get an idea of what these different resolutions are relative to each other.

Very true. It's interesting to note that most of the games noted for their graphics are not 1080p. No one is going on and on about Virtua Tennis, but R&C, COD4, and Gears are all running at 720P or below and blowing people away.

Obviously, it's not about the size of your pixels, but how you use them...
