Can we shut up about inflation. We know. We don't care. GTFO.

Wow, you don’t even have the capacity to see the other side of an argument can you? Most people see box-office results as a sign of popularity of a movie, and gross revenue that is unadjusted for inflation makes for an amazingly poor measure for popularity. Avatar is a remarkably popular movie, and has made a ton of money, but it still has a long way to go to being as popular of a movie as many of the 25 movies that are higher than it on the all-time inflation adjusted list. Or in other words, Avatar isn't that impressive because only 1/3 as many people as have seen it as saw Gone with the Wind; DEAL WITH IT! |
you are very much missing the point. this thread is about the highest grossing movie ever. inflation, audience numbers ect have a factor. but at the end of the day AVATAR IS the highest grossing movie ever
yes gone with the wind may have had 3 times the people in, but its still not the highest grossing movie ever. if this thread said AVATAR has had more people see it then any other movie then your point would be valid and i would say yes you are right
Jesus christ on a pony. I never acted angry or insulted anyone in that post. All I did was provide some counter arguments. And instead of debating me or even trying to argue back, you two just jump on me and make jabs at me.
That was probably the most asshole-ish response (in comparison to an original post) I've ever seen, ever.
Guys. Squirrel, by making a neutral observation about inflation, isn't attacking or devaluing Avatar, MUCH LESS YOU. I don't see why this is being taken so personally.
The point is (for those of you who don't understand inflation), while Gone With the Wind may not have grossed as much, the money it did gross was worth much, much more back then. Think 30 cent gas prices (this is a rough guess, I'm by no means a gas price historian).
Basically, he's just pointing out that ticket sales are the best metric for a movie's success, not un-adjusted gross. He's NOT attacking Avatar. Damn, he's just explaining this for the people who don't know or understand this--which judging from your angry, hyper-defensive posts, is a lot of you.
Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Well, some of us do...
Anyways, I think it was quite justified to bring it up, whether or not it's wrong: this thread isn't about bringing up a particular piece of trivia just for the heck of it, it's about bringing up an astounding one, so it's quite fine discussing whether or not it really is astounding.

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made. I won't open my unworthy mouth.
I actually liked Titanic more than this movie.
What are we celebrating again? The same person made both movies.
And there are so many 2000's movies in the top list, that should say a lot.

@Montana, you're probably doing it unintentionally, but you pose some of your rhetorical questions and statements kind of bullishly. Like the forum equivalent of angry body language. So even if you're being more or less calm and rational, it just kind of raises hackles.
But I do the same thing all the time too (I always end up sounding angry/assholish by accident), so sorry for jumping on you and calling your posts angry; it was a little too reactionary.

To be fair, Happy was probably referring to your first post, in which you called his attitude snobbish.

This thread is about how astoundingly well AVATAR has done. at the end of the day its brought in more money then any other movie dispite inflation ect. thats it...and its supposed to be a celebration of that fact
