The servers should be up before launch date.  I mean, you need to test them.  Seems like it'd be a bad idea to not open the servers until launch day.

I don't know when exactly they'll go up and I thought I read that it might be like a day or two prior to the 26th. Regardless, outside of using the training (and I don't know much else about it since it wasn't playable in the beta), you need to use the matchmaking to play in the different game modes. So unless there are enough people getting it early, I doubt he'd be getting much playtime.
