Forums - Sony Discussion - Gran Turismo 5 is already profitable?!!!

It should be interesting if we had PSN numbers;

Around the Network

I don't see how Sony could release GT5 without spending close to $200 between distribution, development, marketing and the physical product itself. I don't see GT5P as being near those numbers.

That would be true if EVERY copy of the game was sold for $40 and EVERY CENT of this money went to the devs. Both assumptions are veeeeeeery wrong.

3.5 million is split between retail and PSN sales. PSN sales aren't at $40, and there are some small costs associated with hosting the game on the PSN. Retail sales aren't always $40 (I think it was infact bundled for a long time in Japan) and then there is money for retailers, transport, production of the blu ray discs.

Obviously once the game releases, it'll be extremely profitable, but not yet

Sounds like a case Finance accounting. The problem is I suspect the prologue costs have been hived off in one direction and may not of even formed the cost of the GT5 so going to have to take this with a pinch of salt.

I remember those threads xD People saying that after GT4, PD has done nothing but focusing on GT5, while their competitors did X, Y or Z quantity of games :P

It's funny, since GT4 (EU/NA release of 2005), I count 3 games released by PD themselves: Tourist Trophy, GT5P and GT PSP xD

If GT5 releases this year, that gives you an average of 1 game per 1,25 years, much higher than said competitors xD

Oh well :P

It's not very fair towards other developers to count GT5P in that comparison. They could launch several of these prologue titles without much additional effort (just publish a few development milestones), and other developers can argue their demos count as launched games as well.

I know GT5P has more content than most demos, but it's still basically an incomplete version of a game being developed, making it essentially zero effort to launch (same as demos).

That's true, but whenever GT5P is put into the table, it's always counted as a different development time and budget (see Onyxmeth response). Even not counting GT5P, there are still two another major projects developed by PD, GTPSP and TT, which still puts the average at 1 game per 1,66 years, still better than their competitors.

I think that it's still not fair when people talk about PD and their long development times, discarding all the projects that they do in between.
