Whats the obvious part, because obviously I missed it?

We have 3+ years of evidence saying the market wanted motion controls, and you question it.  It blows my mind.

I'm questioning whether it was good for the industry or not.  I dont think it was.  Just because Nintendo is doing well doesnt mean the industry is doing well.  Making a console so completely different from the others made software developers have to focus on 2 completely different setups.  This was not a problem last gen with all 3 consoles being very similar, where only minor tweaks needed for each console.   Now I am not saying that Nintendo is completely to blame here,  alot of these developers made bad decisions with game development.  I am just saying that Nintendo can also be blamed despite their financial situation being as good as it is.

How is giving the industry more customers than it's ever had before bad for them?

Well maybe for starters that the industry is hurting pretty bad right now?

Dont get me wrong adding new customers are great, but are they the kind of customers that keep the industry alive and kicking by constantly supporting it and buying new games on a regular basis?   No, they arent

Fun fact: Wii's software attachment rate is on par with the PS3's.

With or without Wii Sports included?

Dunno, but even if it was with, without woud be average PS3s having 6 games, and Wiis having 5. (and it also assumes that Wii Sports would have 0 selling power on its own)

Still not exactly a great example of PS3 owners buying loads and loads of games and Wii owners not buying anything after Wii Sports, though

The industry as a group has never made as big profits as these last years, the issue is the majority of those are concentrated into fewer companies ( Nintendo + Acitivison probably represent over 90% of the profits)...

And I'd say most of Activision's profit actually comes from Blizzard which doesn't even make video games.

I don't know if your statement is correct though. Especially if one subtracts the losses from the profits..

Blizzard doesn't make video games ?:

What exactly does it make then ????

If Wow isn't a video game, Wii Fit sure isn't either.........

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

They may have lost a lot of money (for various reasons including the economy) but did they go bankrupt? No they did not. Are they still in a position of power in the market place? Yes they are. Has the market lost some poorly ran competitors freeing up the market space for companies like Sony to capitalize on it? Yes it has.

This is not terribly on-topic, but how is Sony in a position of power in the market place? They have a minority of market share in every significant market segment... TVs, gaming, phones, music players, you name it.

2009

Movies : 13.9% marketshare 3rd position (1st warner, second paramount) : this change a lot yoy depending on releases, Sony has been in top 4 last 5 years with a marketshare hovering around 13.5%, for example Fox which is never in top 5 will jump there in 2010 due to Avatar).

Music : 22% marketshare, 2nd position...(1st Universal music group), has been stable the last 5 years.

These are the facts, they do not acknowledge your claims.

Big companies fall, and they fall hard. Look at Atari, Sega or the now defunct Midway... it always happened, and the game industry still went on. its not dieing, its simply changing, and thats the way it should be

This. There's nothing new about poorly managed bloated companies failing and nimbler and cleverer outsiders emerging.

I usually don't call PC games video games. Anyway, Blizzard has a radically different kind of product, it's almost meaningless to compare them to the rest of Activision-Blizzard or other game publishers.

I was thinking of electronics, but thanks for adding those.

I'd say the movies part doesn't exactly prove me wrong, 13.9% and 3rd place is hardly a "position of power". So that leaves music where they're 2nd...

There is no position of power for movie but 10 companies fighting it out every year, a company number one a year can be number 5 the following year....

Sony and Paramount are those doing better as they are the only one to  have managed consistently to stay in the top 4 the last 5-10 years...

Activision-Bllizard is the biggest third party in the gaming industry, why on earth would it be meaningless to include them ????????????????????????

Pretty much every third party gaming company runs a MMO so you include every other MMO but not Wow ?

My point was that they're the most profitable and consistent part of Activision-Blizzard, to put Activision's profits into perspective when we're talking about the profitability of the console market.

Funny I thought the title of this thread was about the video game industry and so was the OP post...
