Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Video Game Industry is Dying!!!

What a rotten article, written by a fearmonger.

The gaming industry is doing great and it will remain successful and profitable for decades.

No major change has happened and will not happen. Companies come and go just like in every industry. Some employees lose their jobs, but the inflow of new blood is just as big.

And never has there been so many quality games as in this generation.

The companies are not doing great. Only a few of them are actually posting a profit. some of them are even dying. And they are "The Video Game Industry".

Fewer companies means fewer games. And most likely that will mean fewer quality games next generation.

Even with the economic downturn games are selling more than ever. And even with the companies getting more money then ever, they incurr more losses than ever. That's not a good thing.

(naturally, that is assuming this graph is accurate, I'm guessing it's NPD figures)

Yes it is NPD.

Let's not forget digital distribution, ~10% ?

AND THEY STILL POST LOSSES!!!

Second biggest year ever

AND THEY STILL POST LOSSES!!!

I can only assume you did not read the second part of my post. Please do, and know that I agree with you.

What? Eidos got swallowed due to financial problems. Midway went bankrupt. EA, Take 2, THQ and now Ubisoft are all losing money. The industry is not doing great.

I did and I agree with you. Only you and stof posted that graph in the context it was used in the article. The NPD confirmation was for you, the rest was for everybody who didn't read the article. My fault I didn't make it clear.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

The Video game industry NEEDS to die!!!!

They turned their back on Nintendo the saviors of the Industry, and they said they should go 3rd party?!!

Serves them right!!!

Gaming make me feel GOOD!

The industry as a group has never made as big profits as these last years, the issue is the majority of those are concentrated into fewer companies ( Nintendo + Acitivison probably represent over 90% of the profits)...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

And I'd say most of Activision's profit actually comes from Blizzard which doesn't even make video games.

I don't know if your statement is correct though. Especially if one subtracts the losses from the profits..

The issue is that game developers feel the need to make games with groundbreaking visuals which is skyrocketing the budgets. Western developers need to be more like the Japanese developers.

Complete failure of an article.
Not only does it fail to notice that we are in a recession, but also that it isn't the enthusiasts who have been buying less, but the casuals who have no real vested interest in gaming as an entertainment source.

I personally like this qoute:

"Companies need to stop forcing industry standards and allow the market to set standards for itself."

So is it safe for me to say that we can blame Nintendo for forcing motion controls on the industry when its obvious that the industry couldnt handle it? The industry nor the market was asking for motion controls during the last gen.

No, it is not safe to say that.  Just look at the sales of the Wii.  It is obvious that a large portion of the market wants motion controls.

But did the market want it before this generation started?
