Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Gamasutra article (interesting facts on Sony)

@Grimes: I don't put any word in YOUR mouth, I'm talking about this article, this thread, explaining why it doesn't make sense at all in my opinion.

My point about this Gamasutra article is they're taking NPD numbers and use it to conclude something about the PS3, while as I just showed, the US is not at all Sony PS3 main market, since it sells a lot more elsewhere...

And I'll say again, the US is the biggest single country video game market in the world. It represents close to a third of global video game sales. The US may not be the PS3's best market, but it SHOULD be if it wants to be the global leader.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

@Grimes : I disagree completely then. PS3 will always sell a lot more in Europe + Japan (total : double the hardware US sales this week).

The fact that the #1 market is still (but not by much) the US doesn't mean every product should consider it as the most important market. Some products sell more elsewhere and are perfectly fine with it.

If anything, 360 needs a lot more succeeding outside the US than Sony needs to succeed in this sole country.

In the end, what matters is WORLDWIDE success, nothing else. Hence the stupidity of a single country analysis.

The only company that has worldwide success in Nintendo. It leads in every major market. If that's so important, then Nintendo has it.

Not to mention that it's way more then a third of global sales when it comes to software.

North America is still by far THE market to win.  No offense to the Playstation, since it's doing quite well considering all the missteps in it's creation and launch.

It shows how powerful the Playstation name is that it could withstand all the mismanagement and not pull a Saturn or Gamecube.

@Grimes : Sony and MS are mostly successful worldwide too, just not as much as Nintendo right now. Sure, MS fails in Japan, but overall, 360 is nearly a worldwide success.

@Kas : Nobody said the US didn't matter. PS3 is doing more or less fine there too anyway since the slim. It sells the same as the 360 in the US now in hardware.

My point was you can't analyze anything just considering the US for the PS3 since it accounts for a third of its sales...

People usually analyze based on WAY less then a third of something.

If you could even get a third of something there wouldn't be much need to Analyze.

Also, the US is more then a third when it comes to the revenue market.  The US moves way more software per system then europe or Japan (at least according to the numbers I can find on this site.)

I mean, to put in perspective.

In Januray PS3 sold 206,000,000 pieces of Software

106,000,000 of that came from the US.

That's like, ~half of Sony's PS3 revenue... and it's the PS3's worst market.

America is still the big dog you wanna cater to.

Ok, but they make global conclusions based on a market where PS3 doesn't perform as well and they would have to consider the other half. The whole article doesn't make sense actually...

Sure it does... the PS2 and PSP's declines in europe have been GREATER then the USAs.

Besides the revenue declines are mostly proportional.
