FY '09 (or '08 whichever one ended March 2009) Quarter 3.

The divsion made a profit, when PS2 and PSP sales were very strong.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

It really depends on Europe if Sony made profit last quarter. In EU they probably make profit even from PS3 hardware sales due the strong euro.

Been waiting to repost this

It only loses $36 in the US ...

but in EU it costs about 300 euros (i think correct me if im wrong) which is 429.48 U.S. dollars, $93.48 profit

and the UK £250 which is 403.325 U.S. dollars, $67.325 profit

it doesnt sell extremly well in the uk but sales very well in the rest of the EU so they're probably making a profit with the slim

The taxes are also much higher in Europe. Distibution, localization and marketing costs are also probably higher.

except you are comparing the price with tax, to the price without tax.

VAT ~20% or so about 50 euroes goes straight to the government. So ~250 Euroes = ~$360. So given that in Europe they have to translate to multiple languages, higher distribution costs, and advertising in multiple languages, that extra $60 doesn't look like much.

(edit: sorry, google/my own typing failed me, correct numbers are now used)

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

@Tenkin, EU prices are tax inclusive, US prices are not. VAT is around 20% in most EU countries, so that means the PS3 costs around €250 without tax, which is $360. Obviously it is making less loss in Europe but I'm skeptical that it's making a profit per unit.

Either way, the profitable platforms have declined in those regions too.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

www.xnagg.com/zombieasteroids/publish.htm

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Did anyone note the $30 price drop of the PS2?

That cuts the margin of the console by a good amount. They sold nearly 1.5m PS2's at the lower price this year in Americas.

It just looks really bad all around for Sony in America.

It might be best to wait 2-3 weeks until Sony's report comes out so see what's going on.

either way, the PS3 is never going to make back the money it lost so it doesn't really matter anymore.... the PS3 has lost them easily over $8 billion.... and no they have never made a profit with the PS3 in any quarter. What they did do is make $50 million in one quarter with the Games division, which is all three playstations together (you know the two profitable ones as well as the PS3) though they followed that up with more losses.

Christmas quarter could see them making a profit I suppose.... though decreases in PS2 software will not help.

@Tenkin. nordlead and demotruk.

You should really be converting Euros and $ into Yen... but nordlead and demo's point stands, Our prices include tax.... so Sony doesn't get 300 Euro or £250 for selling it here.

Does the Wii software figure include packed-in Wii Sports?
