Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Does Not Have "A Rich Online System Like Xbox Live" Says Yamauchi

Reasonable said:
Reading the full thing he's clearly saying:

PSN
Pros - developers allowed freedom to determine online service provided
Cons - requires more developer effort to build up what they want to deliver

Live
Pros - more developed infrastructure and toolset
Cons - more restrictive on developers on what they can offer

He doesn't seem to be talking from a user perspective at all but a developer one, and from what I understand of each his comments sound pretty accurate to me.

Again this is all Yamauchi is trying to say nothing else^.

I would just like to dispel a few misnomers going around.

360 games can use dedicated servers. Forza 3 does. L4D does.

360 games can have consumer hosted servers. It is called XServer. Section 8 allows this.

360 games can have user generated content. Forza games do, Halo 3 does.

There has been free DLC. Forza had some, Burnout had some, L4D had some.

And yes, this developer was speaking about the services MS provides for online functionality.

Just to be clear in my earlier posts (not sure if you saw them) I'm not saying Live doesn't have any free DLC or UCG just that, so far as I know it's more restrictive on how - for example Forge in Halo 3 vs true mods in UT3 on PS3 (which never took off ironically).

The other difference (for now anyway) is Live is a 2 tier system, with Gold/Silver which affects things too - for example no BBC iPla

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
