Forums - Gaming Discussion - Top 10 Ways to Fix JRPGs

Words Of Wisdom said:

Okay, let's do a quick analogy.

JRPGs = Chicken Nuggets.

Let's say some people aren't happy with Chicken Nuggets.  They don't like the breading so they'd rather the makers just leave it off.  Okay, so now we have breadless chicken nuggets, but you know... they're too small.  People want them bigger.  So now we have extra large chicken nuggets.  Finally people decide they no longer like chicken so they replace the chicken with fish. So what's left?

At this point, you have to look at what's left and ask yourself "Should we keep them labeled as Chicken Nuggets or call them Fish Fillets?"

A lot of people don't realize that many elements they don't like are simply part of the JRPG genre.  Those elements are what define it.  And you know what?  I want those people to go away because they don't want to play JRPGs, they want to play some other game and pretend it's a JRPG

If they want Fish Fillets then more power to them but they can keep their hands off my Chicken Nuggets because I like them just the way they are.

This is genius. ROFL

The biggest problem I have with Western RPGs is that, unlike more mainstream type RPGs like Final Fantasy, they focus solely on a target audience of power nerds and dungeon of dragons nerds. They focus on the same nerdy audience who has to play shooters online 90 hours a week and listen to lots of heavy metal music so they can feel uber 1337 hardcore badass (even though they probably can't even jog a half a kilometer without passing out and dying). That's why the more mainstream Japanese RPGs are more popular and will continue to remain so.

Yeah, it is much better to focus on forum dwelling anime nerds.

Final Fantasy and Tales are not all JRPGs.  There ARE JRPGs that target markets beyond 10-18 year old males.

And by beyond you mean forum dwelling anime nerds?

You mean like you?

I'm talking games like Dragon Quest, Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter.  Which hit markets beyond that age group in Japan.

Sorry but I hate anime. ;(

Those games are exactly the kind of games which appeal only to the anime nerds.

No foolin’.  So because you hate Anime, those games can only be liked by Anime nerds.  Your logic is so unfaultable, you should run for congress.

And because you happen to be a anime fan, those games have wide appeal! Gee.

False. I hate anime, and I love the FF series to death.

I never said I was an Anime fan.  I was just stating the facts about what games were popular and unique for the JRPG genre.

However, I will state that, aside from these facts, I am an Anime fan.  But you don't have to be to like these games.  Hell, Monster Hunter looks more like a WRPG than most JRPGs and Dragon Quest plays more like a WRPG than any other JRPG out there.

You don't have to say that. Even your nickname shouts that you are one. :) But I see that you proved your own logic wrong! I have no objections about the uniqueness of those games. And I do believe that they are popular... among the forum dwelling anime nerds.

Don't think I proved myself wrong at all.  But think what you want.  All I know is, you don't sell 4 million units for a game just by the popularity of 'internet nerds'.  Unless you want to claim the same thing for the game you are using for your profile image.

Absolutely not. Gears of war appeals to all the cool gamers. Duh. Do you happen to own GoW?

Many of these problems that need to be fixed are just as present in other genres, just in different forms.

A better list would be "top 10 ways to make video games GROW THE FUCK UP".

Actually, I need to think about that for a bit. That would be a fun editorial to write.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

My take on how to fix JRPG's

1: Stop messing with the time honored tradition of Fight, Magic, Item, Defend, Use, Run
2: I want to control a squad, not 1 and only 1 person during a battle then go to another screen to optimize how my other characters react.
3: More ATB style turn based games. It does not have to be fully turn based, but I want to take time to use strategy. That was more then half the game in most JRPG's back in the day.
4: Give me more then 3 extra characters to choose from for the whole game. Let me decide how to best work my party.
5: No more damned Teenage or younger kids saving the world.
6: Bring back world maps and oodles and oodles of secrets. Include some secrets that are not in the PRIMA GUIDE!!!. Make finding secret something special again, and not just something that anyone who has 10 bux can do. Even better, stop allowing PRIMA to produce walk throughs.
7: Keep save points, but have them be more frequent, approx. 1 hour of game play apart. Keep the really really hard secrets with fewer save points.
8: Full Japanese voice acting with subtitles for all games.
9: Add more 10-20minutes CG spectacles at major turning points in the story line.
10: MAKE MORE AND SELL MORE JRPG's IN THE US!!!!!! !! !! and for good measure a few more exclamation points !!!!!!.

This is coming from a gamer who thinks that Super Nintendo was the absolute golden age of JRPG's and no one will convince me otherwise.
