Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Working on New Disc Format, Possibly For PS4

Not a chance. Blu-Ray still hasn't taken over from DVD with regards to market share. They sunk hundreds of millions into the blu-ray/HD-DVD battle and nearly destroyed the PS3 in the process. They aren't going to drop all that and move to yet another format. There is no reason to move from Blu-Ray they own the tech, they didn't own DVD.

Releasing HVD in their next system would be like releasing Blu-Ray in 2003.

Ps2 and PS1 came out with formats that were already accepted to be the next big thing, that wasn't true when blu-ray launched. It wasn't until a while later that Blu-ray won the format war and started to see some mainstream penetration. By the time PS4 releases DVDs will still be > 50% marketshare i'd bet, why would they want to develop a new disc?

Maybe for PS5, because by then there is a possibility of higher resolution TVs. a format exclusively for games, which are the only things capable of utilizing a fraction of that space at this time, is stupid. A BLu-ray disc is sufficient space for any 1080P movie with all the loaded features, until their is another resolution bump i don't see a new format coming.

Digital Distribution? A 4 Gig download from Steam took 2 days on my DSL.

At this point even I am wondering why Sony would do this, I think it won't come out for a long time if they really are planning this (I am betting in 10 years time maybe)
There is still plenty of room to improve Blu-Ray, so I really don't want to see then new media until Blu-Ray has been maxed out, just like DVD is currently.

it's the future of handheld

PS VITA = LIFE

For PS4, no. For PS5, yes cause that is 16 years from now (6 for ps3 and 10 for ps4).

I hope y'all knows what this means:

MGS4 = few hours of cutscene.
MGS# = few days of cutscene. I hope there is a save option in between LOL.

Maybe a upgraded Blu-ray , I do NOT see them doing this for PS4 . Maybe its PSP2 .

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

As long as launch price remains below the 350€ it is quite enough.

I think the Blu-Ray we have now is enough, hopefully the PS4 will still be compatible with DVD, Blu-Ray and whatever else it may use.

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

They need to have the new format standardized and accepted (or at least very likely to be) by a large part of HW, SW and movie industry before they decide, so it's a little premature right now. If the rest of the industry stays happy with BD long enough, next gen consoles could simply adopt BD's with more layers.

It would keep with the tradition of PlayStation systems always releasing with new disk formats.

Yeah, because the PSX invented CDs, right?

All the PS2 did was hasten acceptance of DVD as a format for movies. It was going to happen anyway. You want to know the reason people didn't want to move on to DVD? There was only one. It was "I can't record my TV shows on them".

Anyway, holographic disc technology was in development years before the PS3 came out, and won't be ready for like, the better part of a decade. Don't get upset about stuff that won't even happen before your hair starts turning gray.

By the way, the PS3 won't be able to read the highest capacity Blu-ray discs. Sure is future-proof around here.
