Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Working on New Disc Format, Possibly For PS4

I dont believe it, if anything they will start adding layers upon layers. Some companies already have working 16+ layer Blu-ray discs, thats all they would need for the next generation.

Or in other words, Sony: "We didn't learn jack shit from the PS3." A lot of people lambasted them for the high cost of the PS3 at launch, and even to this day, some people still think that the BR disk is unnecessary. (I'm not going to argue for or against the validity of the statement itself.) So rather than trying to keep costs down for the PS4, we're going to introduce yet another media that will keep the price sky high! The PS4 will retail for nine hundred ninety nine US dollars, and all you Sony fanboys will gobble it up even without any games! (Or rather, I can see Kutaragi saying something akin to that, but in more PR-friendly speak.)

No, this much space is not needed. DVDs are getting filled, and becoming a limiting factor, so moving on from that is reasonable. But very few games are filling up a dual-layer BR at the old 50 GB spec, let alone the new 66 GB one. There is no need to rush a new format out for the PS4. Sticking with BR would be a far better choice in my eyes.

Im waiting for the Gren-Ray and HDHDHDV format war.

6,000 gb holy shit

Not just 6000 GB, it's 6 TB. 6 times more than my entire computer holds.

6 TB? I call BS on it. Why would that much be needed for gaming? All they need is a faster blu-ray drive on the ps4. Blu-ray can already supposedly hold up to 200gb or so which is waaaay more than enough for gaming

not enough for uncompressed data. Wow, imagine developing games. Compression? Fuck that.

I believe that this increase in data space will eventually become necessary as we begin to see full realism games and 3d incorporated games. However I feel that it will never be necessary for movies, making it a game only format, people need to realize that with games becoming this detailed, it will take good games far longer in order to be fully developed. Also it will create a lag that i think will begin to damage the smaller companies.

They just want to add more space on the disk.  Its not for the PS4 just for the PS3...dang people that's how rumors get started...lol

Arent the majority of PS3 games uncompressed anyway?

Also Pioneer had a 16 layer 400GB disc and that was using the old 25GB per layer.  Using the new technology that would be over 500GB.  So how would that not be enough?

6 Tera's? such sky-high BS.
