Just got back from seeing the movie. It was great. Easily a 9.0/10 movie.

I've been trying to see it again (for the third time, this time with the parents), but the IMAX in my area is sold out through next weekend. This is insane.
According to box office mojo its only 500M short of Titanic. It should be able to hit $2B and the hype of it selling so much will just keep it selling.
Seeing Titanic fall will be just as amazing as seeing GTA leaving the harcore throne. Time just keeps flowing, I guess...

Who knew it would take a James Cameron movie to beat a James Cameron movie as biggest box office grossing?

The problem is, that the market is much different than it was for Titanic, or Gone With The Wind. So its hard to just use inflation-adjusted numbers to show which movies were the best of all time, or not. For example, GWTW didn't get a TV deal worth millions of dollars when it debuted. It didn't have the DVD coming out 6 months after its theater release. No piracy either. Titanic didn't have DVD either - it was in theaters for almost an entire year (whereas $100m-grosser Paranormal Activity was in theaters a whopping 3 months before the DVD released). So as much as adjusting for tickets can be a barometer, actual revenue is just as useful, because any movie that makes it high on that list is going to have a lot more secondary income coming in. |
Not only that. The assumption that gwtw would sell as many tickets now as it did then is a flawed one. Not only that, but calculating inflation adjusted grosses ww is far more difficult then it is in america. And thats not even taking into account the multiple times these films were released.

A GWTW-type movie would be lucky to hit $1 billion, worldwide.
The problem is that if you look at the market when GWTW came out, you understand that the movie was so huge, there weren't any movies that could really play against it for not weeks, or months, but YEARS.
So any event movie today is going to get smashed by another movie in a much shorter time frame.
Avatar does have an incredibly unique advantage here, which has made it #2 in history (for revenue) and will make it #1:
3D.
Just like Montana has stated (anecdotal), 3D theaters are still being packed for Avatar. Not only are they a rare commodity, the fact is there aren't many movies that could steal away screens from Avatar. From my understanding, the next movie to use 3D is Alice in Wonderland - a movie coming out in MARCH. That gives Avatar 4 months of exclusivity for most 3D/IMAX theaters.
Any movie that gets that kind of run in today's market is going to do well. Throw in the 3D surcharge ($4 where I live), and Avatar was supposed to get this kind of run.
Heck, look at ANY 3D movie made last year - Final Destination, Ice Age - both did phenomenally well (IA3 was a huge BO shocker, and FD3D sold insanely well for being a trashy horror movie).
But, 2 years from now, 3D will be everywhere, and the surcharge won't apply. Then it'll be a few more years if not a decade before a movie breaks Avatar's BO record (which I put at $2 billion now).
..
....
Oh man, I just checked the weekend estimates. Avatar made almost $200 million worldwide THIS WEEKEND. It INCREASED from last weekend. It was supposed to drop 20-30% overall.
Yeah. Titanic is done. If you hate Avatar, you'll have to deal with it being the #1-grossing movie for a very long time.
Total Worldwide Box Office stands at $1,331 million USD.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Titanic is pretty much done with being the #1 grossing movie. James Cameron's career has been pretty much building up to this.
It was fucking beautiful. The whole pony tail thing was weird though, never got used to it..
The 3D was a cool novelty, nothing more.
I really, really hope it kicks titanic's ass.
