Forums - Sony Discussion - Metal Gear Solid 4- Does anyone else think it's massively overrated?

To me it goes like this... MGS > MGS 2 >>> MGS 4 > MGS 3

I absolutely hated MGS 3 due to the storyline being set in the past and due to the camera HEAVILY HINDERING the gameplay (I played Snake Eater and didn't bother with Subsistence).

MGS 4 has great graphics and the storyline is all kinds of yumminess, apart from Naomi who I loved in MGS and is just a major bitch now. The game felt very light on gameplay though. As if I spent 1 hour watching a cutscene (which I don't mind when they're as well done as they were) and then I spent 10 minutes running and shooting, since stealth was basically not needed. It felt very meh.

Yes, that was a big problem!

Fortunately for me, I played the Subsistence version with its 3rd person camera. But the original camera sucked a lot indeed!

It can really ruin the game, if its the only option.

MGS2 had that same camera problems. But bad as it was, it was nowhere bad as 3's camera.

I still don't get the MGS phenomenon. Somebody at work loaned me MGS4. I sort of knew the back story, but not very well, so I read up and got re-familiarized with all the plot lines and characters. I tried playing MGS4, and just absolutely hated it. It looks pretty, but I don't get why the story has to be so stupid.

jst reading the story will not make you familiarize with whole MGS and emotional feelings for the characters. You really need to play the previous game. You should start with MGS 3

uh....
NO.

MGS 1 - 10
MGS 2 - 9.8
MGS3 - 10
MGs4 - 9.8

imo.

I disliked the fact that you had to travel to soooo many places. Would have been better if it was just one facility (more or less) like in the previous MGSes.

You all do realize that, while the game is a multiple sequel and obviously there will always be elements that only long timers will be familiar with, the fact the game is completely inaccessible to newcomers is another massive flaw, right? You cannot in your right mind ask someone to go play MGS 1-3 to understand 4, it needed to be done better to both appeal to new fans and old fans alike. But like someone already said, MGS4 was basically fan service.

And no, skipping the cutscenes isn't an option (on first playthrough) because A) you have no idea how long they will last, might be 30 mins, might be 2 mins, and B) the game is already enough of a jigsaw puzzle, you need to watch a lot of them to understand what's going on and the relationships between the characters. I thought this was obvious, why would you skip the cutscenes if you want to understand the story?

The truth is the cutscenes needed to be edited. It's like a movie, if a movie last 4 hours without reason it will be ripped to shreds by critics as needing editing and tigher direction. There's no reason whatsoever for the overblow cutscenes in the game, other than fan service and Kojima's megalomania. You could tell the same things in MGS4 with half the cutscene time.

I have not played it but I love movies to be long and very long. I don't see how critics will rip the movie to shreds if its long. Take avatar for example its 3 hours and i completely loved it (i need more long movie) but when i watch a short movie it is just boring.
