Technicaly it's impossible just because there aren't enough power to do so.

That's why I always, in my evaluation of a game, seperate art direction from technical graphics.

Even a fairly low res game technically can look wonderful with the correct art direction.

ICO and SOTC do have great art direction, so do games like Okami.

Crysis has middling art direction I thought - although it's of course limited by setting, as the aliens, etc. aside everything has to look as expected - i.e. a Jeep looks like a Jeep, a tree looks like a tree.

Obviously fantasy setting games have an advantage with Art Direction, as they can go to town without havint to look like something already known in the real world.

I agree with you 100%. I mean I look at Valkyrie Profile 1 for the PS1 with the water color backgrounds and it is by no means an eyesore. That game is absolutely beautiful. So is VP2. Muramasa on the Wii is also amazing.

I've seen Crysis maxed out, no console has a hope in hell of replicating anything remotely close to that until next generation.

Lawl. No. Not remotely. They don't even match Crysis 2 on consoles, let alone Crysis 1 on PC.

None of them are even sandbox to begin with.

Killzone 2 was close,
defo thing God of War 3 will in parts and GT5 has a shot if it looks better then prologue

no,
GT5 besides decent looking cars have nothing on Crysis or even first Far Cry on buffed pc,
GoW3(based on demo) have nothing on Crysis either since it looks almost exactly like God of War 2 with higher resolution, slightly better textures and few additional effect here and there(personally i can't believe how is it possible that people are impressed with GoW 3 graphics after trying the demo),
Last Guardian - no,
MGS Rising - no(MGS4 was so overrated graphically with some of the textures looking like they were taken from old ps2 game),
FF13V - HELL NO,
Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 don't have anything on Crysis either(except character animations in Uncharted 2),

right now there is not even one console game that would look better than pretty much all pc games released in 2006-2007.

I have seen Crysis with ultra High mode on a giant screen. No Console this gen will be able to do something like this. I think that will be the graphics level from the launch games of PS4 and Xbox720.

But it would be a small jump for a gen so maybe the first games of next gen will top that easily. But crysis on Ultra High mode is the least I would accept for the next gen because the step between Uncharted 2 and Crysis/Ultra High mod is big but not big enough for an entire gen of consoles.

I really wonder how the graphics in 5 years will look like. Even if the step is not as big as Ps2-PS3 it should be big because the longer I play HD games the more things i see which are annoying.

They will probably beat the new crysis that is coming on the 360 and PS3 (beat the ps3/360 versions that is), but i dont think any of these games can outdo any crysis on a pc doped up on nvidiaroids...
