I think that game is the worst pc war game ever made. Every iteration of it ever. My instructor at ITT loved that game, so we played it from time to time after class (usually and mostly Call of Duty), and I hated it. I honestly could not see what anyone would like in that game..it was soooooo slow, and on top of that, after spending 30 minutes getting within range, half your damn army runs away. Improved? Maybe..but what's an improvement on shit? Fertilizer? I dunno man..

Can you be more specific about your complaints about Total War? I've only played Medieval I and Rome Total War extensively, and only played a few dozzen hours for Medieval II (College doesn't allow you to play all nighters, which this game is meant for). I suck at online.

If you're playing single player, you could just fast forward, and the enemy only spawns really far away if they're completely fucked anyway (in which case you could have just done auto resolve). If you're talking about online, you should have set some basic rules, and I'm sure it wouldn't take 30 minutes literally. A major part of the strategy is advancing, especially if you have Macedonian Phalanx units (with the tiny shields) that are weak against arrows, and constantly shifting your lines and calvary. It's sorta like Football and its setups.

If half your army ran away, you must have made your units reallly vulnerable... which means that you didn't properly advance and set up your formations.

Well, it was only local multiplayer, and what you described may very well be the case.  It didn't help that I never got any tips on how to play, they just said 'This is what we're playing!' I naturally sucked, most likely, because of that and the fact that the game seems to be pretty complicated with the varying units, formations, movement patterns and such.  It's not a game that's easy to just 'pick up and play', and because of that probably isn't a game you should ever pick up and for the first time, play against a bunch of other people (of varying skill level, some as bad as me, some quite skilled like my instructor).  In that instance, you can't really 'fast forward' or 'resolve' and it seemed to take forever.

It seems like the guy you were playing with was a douche. He should have given you basic tips and went easy on you.

I can't play online, because while traditional tactics work Offline, you have to get creative against real players, and also be good at micro managing (pure skill).

It kinda sucks, being happy at beating the stupid AI, but I just can't compete against real players.

But single player campaign is still really fun, especially if you pick a bad faction and you're constantly setting up forts and taking command for battles which are against your odds.

I kinda cheat and constantly quick save. Maybe I'll get better at Medieval II, challenge myself to a higher difficulty, and only use Quick save if I do an unintentional mistake.

I'm no stranger to that lol as I'll do that for certain things and if I'm bored enough, I'll keep quickloading till I get at least some result.

"What do you mean the assassination failed?! By god, it may be a 20% chance, but that king is going down!!!!!"

Actually I've just played one damn long campaign and what I can say is that performance and stability wise its great, but the AI leaves a lot to be desired and the game has some fundamental design flaws.

Ok first some bugs I encountered, there's one where when unit comes as a reinforcement and enters the battlefield it doesn't pass the battlefield border completely, some soldiers remaining behind the red line., I lost a few battles this way because I couldn't kill that unit, and had to retreat.Another would be that the game slows down like hell on the world map where there is big cluster of enemy armies around, and you'll see that a lot.

The AI even on the hard difficulty can be really retarded, If I create one solid line of infantry the enemy just comes in small waves which are annihilated by my line. This happens in 90% of the battles. Also on the world map the enemy cant attack a nation if its attacking through its ally's borders, the armies just bunch up there doing nothing.

One fundamental design flaw is the new reinforcement system where there can only be 20 units for each side at any one time, thus you can fight with one army against 6 no problem, cuz they cant surround you or anything, they are can never outnumber you another flaw related to this is that all the reinforcements come through one point(for one army), thus you can pretty much group your units at the border and create a cross fire formation, the enemy units come one by one and get slaughtered, whats worse is that sometimes your ally reinforcements come though the exact same place as the enemy and sometimes behind the enemy's line thus getting slaughtered in the process.

Another flaw is that when defending a city there is no incentive what so ever to defend the walls, you can only kill of about 10% of the enemy tops and once they climb the wall the melee battles take a huge toll on your troops and the outcome is uncertain, its much better to defend the town square and create crossfire fields and since the enemy again comes in small waves they are completely wiped out. Although this isn't as flawed as in Rome total war where your units were rout proof when inside the town square( the best system is in Medieval 2). Another complaint would be that I only had to ever use the basic line infantry. Anything like light infantry, cavalry and artillery where pretty much useless and nothing but a a hassle(although the very latter artillery is pretty good) and the only time I ever had problems in battle was when the enemy had more line infantry than usual. Basically light infantry is too weak, cavalry is useless once the square formation is developed and artillery will only ever take out 5% of an army at its very best.

While the game makes a lot of progress in some fields including AI, it's nowhere near as good and balanced As Medieval 2, great game but not as good as its predecessor. I haven't tried the toughest difficulty yet since I don't wanna lose another 2 weeks of my life since this game is pretty addictive but only fun for the first few hours.
