Blue: Sorry it was something I saw linked through at www.beyond3d.com quoting from a Sony executive. Its something I regret not saving a bookmark for.

Red: They had a lot of software development sent their way exclusively at the start of the generation on the assumption that the PS3 would win. The fact that the library exists is in part because of the PS2 and PS1. Furthermore consumers all made the assumption that certain titles would be exclusive or at least release on the PS3. Look at FFXIII sales in Japan, a majority of their userbase bought a PS3 in part because of an assumption that FFXIII would be released for that system.

Blue- Ahh, thank you

Red- I have no doubt that some people (maybe even many) originally bought a ps3 because of possible future exclusives. But that was only at the beginning of the generation. For the past 2 years and the majority of the ps3's life plus userbase, that couldn't have been the case. The current success that the ps3 is experiencing has to be due to the diversity and quality of it's games, no?

I don't see how it could be selling above the 360 this holiday season without that. (even excluding Japan because of the exclusive FF13 release)

@Blue I remember it because it came up around the time there were big arguments about the cost of Killzone 2. I used it as an example to prove that Killzone 2 was not the most expensive release.

@Red: The data seems to show in the demographics and the games bought. The traditional PS1/2 franchises and the games which have a long pedigree have done better on the PS3 relative to the Xbox 360 and the new I.P or recent I.P games have done relatively better on the Xbox 360. In addition to this the Playstation audience tends to be slightly older than the Xbox 360 audience with the latter appealing a lot to teens and 20 year olds with the Playstation audience skewed towards the thirties more.

If comparing the Xbox 360 to PS3 around the world. Where the PS3 is doing better relative to the Xbox 360 are also areas where the PS2 did better relative to the Xbox compared to say America where the Xbox 1 did the best against the PS2 so does the Xbox 360 do the best against the PS3. Im not saying that Sony haven't done good work as well this generation, all im saying is that they had a natural advantage which has helped to keep them in the game. No console not called Playstation has survived by launching at 600 Euro or 5-600 Dollars.

Squilliam, your opinion is noted and very negative? why u always being a party crasher?
Do you want sony to fail so you can tell us you told us before? if sony beats the 360, and becomes profitable then what?

Xbox 360 is following the same path as HD-DVD...RIP undercutting the market only works for so long

I say if FF XIII, GT 5, and Resident Evil 5 had all come out early in the consoles life then no doubt sony would be dominating.

i say if they had come early when the console was for $500, these franchises would have died... its good that they r coming at the time when PS3 is atleast affordable.

I retort with the blind assertion that Sony is following the path of General Motors.

1. Rely on brand name and past success.

2. Release vehicles unsuitable to the market conditions.

3. Be unable to change due to management inertia

4. Discount said vehicles heavily to maintain market share/production but post massive losses.

5. Go bankrupt at the first sign of industry wide trouble.

6. Get bailed out by the government.

P.S. If the Xbox 360 was following the same path of HD-DVD it wouldn't have lasted for four years, actually post two years of profit and it wouldn't still be selling now would it? This generation DVD beat Blu Ray btw if you count the install base of the Wii + 360 combined and compare it to the PS3.

No I don't want Sony to fail. I just think that everyones getting too optimistic about things so I decided to provide doses of reality like the fact that the Wii is still more successful than any console previously released and that the Sony / Microsoft business models suck. Sonys is the original suckyness of the razor/blade mentality and Microsofts is a slightly improved but still sucky model next to the Nintendo model of 'how things are meant to be done'.

i dont see while u pointed that?, if that the case 360 its on the point 4, it got 2 discounts in europe last year, and it's heavy cut in UK being half price of a Dsi PSP Go, almost as cheap. heavily the only reason microsoft doesn't go the way of sega it's because microsoft have deep pockets of windows.

Just for the record Gran Turismo is a bigger franchise than Halo. This gen Sony have made lots of new ip's rather churning out sequels.

Yeah but that's becos they've lost a lot of (what should have been) their exclusive titles for this gen(RE5, GTA4, FF, the next mgs).

I cant believe sony will go into christmas up against Halo Reach and possibly a new Gears game with nothing.... They must have some plans.

u joking? they have gran turismo :p

Given the in-game engine shown in Reach, I am seriously not impressed at all. However if the storyline follows the book closely and the gameplay is not another ODST, then Reach might be a super strong title outside the blind following. I do hope to see a trailer comparable to the one where Master Chief put that shield up (as a PS3 fan, that trailer even got me excited for Halo 3, it was THAT good imo).
Sony also stated that they have several unannounced titles anyways. If they manage to pull out a KH3 or FF vs XIII around that time that would make for great competition. I wonder what's the word on Agent, anyone know?
