Depends.  For myself I have to set an ip address as a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) in my router.  And then I statically assign that ip address in my Xbox 360's network settings.

I had to remove my HDD and stick a clothes hanger (wired, not plastic) inside. Jab the hanger around. When the system rattles when you shake it, you're done.

Yeah, see, I got to skip that part.  My system came that way.  It already rattled when I shook it.

yeh, so if i give my xbox an ip can it be anything?

In order for anyone to answer your question you will have to provide them with the full information they require. I would suggest you explain precisely how you have your 360 connected to the internet before you go any further, for example:

Do you have a router?
Are you connected by a network cable or using the wireless adapter from Microsoft?
Are other devices connected to your router and do they work fine?

I would suggest assuming you have the router set to DHCP (automatic IP assigning) and are plugging in by cable, you should do a reset on your network settings on the 360 as some settings get stuck and need a kick.

All of the above information is of course subject to this not being a troll and joke account wasting theirs and everyone elses time on here.

If you have a router and want to do DMZ this is what you do. Go into your router, and in the DMZ area put in a Ip you want to use (making that the static DMZ IP) . The base number there is usually 192.168.0.1xx or 192.168.1.1xx You just have to pick the number that goes into xxx.

Once you do that go into your 360 Network settings (in NXE its the last blade in the My Xbox branch). Do Manual IP. Enter the IP you used. Subnet is usually 255.255.255.0. Gateway is usually either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (you can see which when your in the router settings picking the Static IP). Primary DNS is the same as the gateway.

Done
