At one of the game shows the past few months Microsoft Research was showing off some work it has done in MMOFPS. The demo seemed to be working really well.
So I think they are closer to reality here then people have been commenting.
Donnybrook...
IMO, with MS having such proprietary technology, already demo-able, it means the real-deal is probably already in production on a rudamentary stage.
IMO, having a real, valid, persistant MMOFPS would be absolutely revolutionary.
Imagine: Playing a Call of Duty-like game, set throughout Europe and Japan, with hundreds of thousands of human and AI-controlled people, waging war on eachother.
Imagine loading up your gamercard, and jumping into a virtual airplane, to be dropped behind "live" enemy lines, attacking real and AI-based enemies, trying to achieve a tactical advantage, only to find your fighting against thousands of AI and human-controlled people.
It could be very, very interesting if you were able to "load" up a huge level, and play with a few hundred humans and a few thousand AI in a given area. It could be magnificent.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It would be pretty awesome.
Isn't/Wasn't Koei working on a Dynasty Warriors MMO-Hack'n'Slash?
What's massive in this context? What's the limit for Battlefield, Quake Wars and others?
stickball's idea for this sounds really good. I hope they do something like that.

Sounds a lot like "Planetside" which did exactly what Mr. Stickball describes on the PC a few years ago. Having a more accessable format on a console would be cool to see.

Gamers have 3 choices this generation: The Exercise Machine, the Movie Machine, or the Game Machine. What kind of gamer are you?
Please Lord, do not waste Bungie's talent on another MMO that I'll get sick of in two months.
Give me Marathon, dammit!

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/
It could always me a MMMO (Marathon Massively Multiplayer Online) FPS game.
Either way, consoles, sans FFXI have had no MMOs whatsoever, having a huge MMOFPS with a persistant world would be a win for Bungie and MS if Bungie did it.
MS makes tons of cash via gold subscripts. and Bungie gets to keep their 3rd party cash.
Did planetside incorporate AI opponents as well as PVP?
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
