They had stopped making any really good games before Nintendo sold them, and the Gamecube didn't seem to suffer (more than normal) in the post Rare era. I am going to have to echo the sentiment that a $600 pricetag on a console was the biggest mistake. I suppose that could possibly be proven wrong by the end of the generation, but I figure it will be the second biggest at best. The other one that might be the biggest (depending on how this generation plays out) is the sticking with catridges on the N64. As much as I love them for sticking with it (I hate load times and FMV cut scenes) it certainly cost them the position as the market leader. |
You arn't gonna be proven wrong by the end of the generation anyway because no matter what now no PS3 costs 600 because of the lackluster sales.

The Rare decision was much like the Nintendo Sony SNES decision except opposite.

If the PS3 remains in third the entire generation, and sells less than 40million then it will be worse than what Nintendo did. The initial price sets the stage for the rest of the generation since you can only cut it so much before consumers get wary. Too many in a row will cause people to just sit and wait for the next one that is bound to be right around the corner.
I still need to know if the 60's are 400 or not, if they are I can pick one up in a week, but you are absolutley right, 2 price drops in less than a year.

I think one of the stupidest decisions ever was MicroSoft actuallying paying for Rare and expecting them to keep pumping out good games like they did for the N64. Letting them go was one of Nintendo's smartest decisions.

Sega 32X and Sega CD were pretty bad. The Saturn's pricing was awful. It was even worse for it's time than the PS3 is for now. Spitting on 3rd parties with the Dreamcast didn't help either.
Nintendo sticking with cartridges and expecting 3rd parties to have no other options was unbelievably bad. Making the Gamecube default color purple and shaping it like a lunchbox wasn't exactly helping get rid of the "kiddie" image.
For Microsoft I would say their repeated attacks on the Japanese market seem like an unnecessary drain on their funds.
For Sony obviously $599 wasn't the best plan in the world, but I would say the real mistake and the one that led to the $599 is that the PS3 was simply released 1 year too early. Prices of the parts were still too high and they didn't really have the kind of first year games they wanted to have out. If they had waited just 1 more year things would have gone so much smoother.

Yea but then they would have been two years and maybe even 15 million units behind the 360 and possibly 16-17 behind the Wii. Even if their starting price was 500, or even 400, that is A LOT of ground to make up. They thought they were doing the right thing (they were mistaken). Of course their launch titles didn't help either..........Just resistance?
