Forums - Gaming - Who else got "duped" by videogame hype discussions on internet?

What I mean here is that you hear a group of people who hype a game so much that you get it, eventhough your first impression is that it is likely something you won't end up playing or getting to?  But, they say it is awesome, so you HAVE to get it.  I have gotten into this multiple times:

* Grand Theft Auto.  I am sorry, but I am not into be a gangster games at all.  However, the buzz is how awesome the game is, so I broke down and got it.  Actually about all of them I did.  I just can't get into them.  I actually thought that GTA4 would be good, because it had multiplayer, but not into that either.

* Valkyria Chronicles.  Oh man, this game is supposed to be the top reason to own a PS3, and is supposed to be SOOO awesome.  Without doubt, no matter what genres you like or dislike, this is a game one is supposed to buy, PERIOD.  It is so good, it is guaranteed to put smiles on your face.  As much as I like strategy titles, this one doesn't do it for me.  I doubt I am going to get to it.  Hey, I am not saying it is bad.  It is good for what it is.  It just isn't something I am into.  I am just not into tactical based action games where you command a party of characters.

* Final Fantasy VII.  Yes, I got this to.  I am not into JRPGs, but count me a sucker for getting this.  It is supposed to be SOOO awesome.  I guess it is fine.  However, I happen to prefer single player WRPGs more, if I decide to play things, or one I can play with other people.

* Ico and Shadow of the Collosus.  Sorry guys.  These may be beautiful games, and something great in there, but I am just not able to get into them.  These go on my list a bit hesitantly, because Ico sort of held my interest (May want to get to it again sometime).

* Viva Pinata.  I dumped this game.  I was told how great of a action-sim game it is, and it was a must get.  I found it was an ok sim game marred with annoying micromanagement, and an annoying action based mini-game for mating animals.

* Gears of War (original).  Cliffy B is SO awesome they say, and this game was a lock to ROCK.  What I found was a game that was SO annoying control-wise, that I nearly ended up throwning the controller down in frustration.  I happened to dump the game, not even finishing it.  I didn't get the buzz.  I did see the potential.  I will say Gears of War 2 is much better for me, and my adding of bots and other things, became an enjoyable game.

* Gran Turismo (plug in driving game here).  Yes I like driving games, as something in the mix, but I have gone through needing to get this or that Gran Turismo game... just because it is supposed to be awesome and you own it.  It ends up sitting around unplayed, and not touched.

* Jagged Alliance (PC).  WOW, I am supposed to really dig this and it is supposed to be beyond awesome as a tactical RPG.  Well, same thing I run into all tactical strategy titles.  I just don't get into them.  Throw in XCom here also.

* Black and White (PC).  This is supposed to be the next awesome game like Populous.  Well, red flags go off that I had to train an animal to do things.  I don't want to do this, but I get it.  Blammo, my first inclination was right about it.  After a short time playing, I stopped and didn't get to it again.

A lesson that I need to learn is that, no amount of screaming how awesome something is anywhere, is going to fundamentally change whether or not I will like something.  If I fundamentally don't want to do something in a game, there is little that can be done to change that.  So, anyone else allow other people's raving about something get to them, and then they broke down and got it and regretted it?

GTAIV and MGSIV for me, duped by both of those.

GTAIV -- I remember having fun just randomly going around and killing stuff with cheat codes in GTAIII. I never had fun with the actual game but that was fun. I tried GTAIV and it just felt like work and I didn't have fun.

MGSIV -- Ugh, I hate the Metal Gear Solid series, it's just so bad to me. People kept going on and on about how great it was and then people started saying it was good even if you didn't play the others so that made me try it and I regretted it ever since.

SFIV -- I remember loving Super Street Fighter II on the SNES back in the day so I decided to give this one a try and it just pissed me off.  If you don't play a Ken or Ryu clone you suck and that's all there is to it.  Sucks for me since I hate all the Ken and Ryu clones.

did you actually buy/rent/play those games? I'm confused because of reading the Valkyria Chronicles section. Anyways, not every game is for everyone, so no surprise you don't like some of them. Seems like you really should buy tactical strategy games though

Anyways, the one game I fell for hype for was Zack & Wiki. If it wasn't for the fact that they move so slow I would have liked the game. But dieing right at the end and then painfully having to redo everything just annoyed me.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Like with GTA4, I got interested in MGS4 due to it having multiplayer added. Unlike GTA4, did play through MGS4, and though it to be a good game. Not even close to "best game ever" for me, but enjoyable enough. It had some touching scenes in it also, and I do like Drebin.

You probably should have listened to Peppy when he said "Never give up, trust your instincts".

I've had quite a good knack for knowing exactly what I'll enjoy playing when it comes to purchasing my own games. I've also been pretty lucky when picking up random games because they are cheap or free, as I've never regretted a choice.

I tend to not rent games now.  I go out and buy them.  Valk. Chronicles was on sale for $30, so I decided to take a shot on it. I thought I might get into it, because I like strategy titles, and this kinda fit.  I think I should avoid games that you micromanage the equipment of more than one character.

Seems to me like you got a problem with the number 4...

2010 Hardware Sales Predictions

Wii: 20m- Sales will drop, but not by much.

PS3: 13.5m- It sold 12m in 2009, its only common sense it will sell more this year.

Xbox 360: 11m- It sold 11m in 2008 and 2009, I think it will sell the same.

My Fanboy Speech...

Why do you have to make excuses to defend a product that you purchased, but that's the only connection you have to it, you don't make it, you don't lose or gain money on it. I don't see where all of the defensiveness comes in, there is no reason for you or anybody else to feel obligated to defend it. Now I would understand if one of you were a developer for the product and you slaved over said product only to hear somebody call it stupid or a piece of junk. But none of you developed it, none of you are mature enough to realize that. Choosing a product all comes down to preference, you chose said product because it is best for you. Simple as that!

I agree with GTA4 (Oscar worthy story was such a joke) and Black&White (so begins Molyneux's overhype machine).

I would add:
Assassin's Creed - Wow, so boring after 2 hours. No variety at all.

Crackdown - Wow, so boring after 2 hours. The demo was so awesome, then you buy the game and it's basically the demo, except you can save, there's no time limit, and the entire map is unlocked.

There are probably others, but those are the ones that stick out in my mind.

Forgot about VC, that's another game I got duped into buying.

I'm not saying VC (or any of the games I listed) are bad, they just weren't for me.  Kuckily I got VC really cheap so it wasn't as bad as deal.

I gave VC a good try and I might go back and try it again one day, I just didn't like it.  I can't really put my finger on why, I think the menus had a lot to do with it, but I just didn't like it.

I never bothered with that in VC. Just assigned everyone the same weapon. I did use some of the Ace weapons though. I can't even be bothered to use more than 1 very small set of characters either. I had fun messing around with my tank settings though, but I didn't really change those either other than the best accuracy/power possible.
