Forums - General Discussion - Avatar is possibly the most beautiful CGI movie ever!

Avatar manages to be the most impressive, beautiful use of CGI to create another world, coupled nicely with the lowest level of narrative ambition.

It's not bad, but in a way that almost seems worse it's simply bland. All that effort, all that expense, for something so familiar and obvious. Couldn't Cameron have actually married the ability to deliver a new world with something new to say or show?

What struck me was how much Avatar resembled the latest version of a AAA videogame. The plot's the same, the weaknesses are the same, but the graphics have been improved.

7/10 and the likely candidate for testing your new 3D TV and BR player, but not a great film nonetheless.

What particularly struck me, was how little it did with so much expense, while a film like Moon did so much with so little expense.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Hated the story, loved a lot of scenes like the dragon flying and final fight.

Need to see it again but its no way as good as T2 and Aliens. It makes me excited to know Cameron is back, and hopefully not just making PG films. I like hard scifi, that is actually hard, like District 9.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Saw it yesterday.
It was ok. I agree with Reasonable. A lot of flash for such tame storytelling.
The movie is quite beautiful though. Probably not even worth it watching it at home.

I saw it yesterday morning in 3D and it was pretty amazing.

I heard that the world he created was amazing but I had no idea it was going to be as incredible as that.

The 3D is always that great but there are some points when it's just brilliant (usually just the small things like fly's buzzing).

I had heard the story wasn't good but I actually liked it. It was cliche as ever but that didn't really matter to me. All the characters were believable for the most part and the colonel was just awesome even if he was the most cliched character.

Seriously, go see this movie now and up its box office numbers. This is a movie that deserves it.

I agree with Reasonable that the story didn't match the brilliance of the visual...so needless to say, the movie is a lock to win all the visual effects and maybe even the cinematography awards, but not much on the meatier awards. The story was basically lifted from the colonization of the “New World” and the destruction on Native cultures in the Americas, except this time they fought back early and united…blah blah blah. It would have been nice to have a more profound plot, to match the films visual brilliance.

I do disagree on the cost of the film...with eye popping visuals like that, there is no question where the money when...yes the film was long, but I didn’t want it to end...I wanted to see more and more of Pandora. When they when out to the other tribes to rally them...there was a real sense of wonderment on my part as to what the other parts of the world look like.

Its definetely a suitable setting for further movies. Yes it was a tad predictable, but when a movie costs this much they maybe weren't willing to risk it on a more interesting narrative. Its still well worth a watch.

I wanna go see this. The stellar reviews solidified this thought.

Was anyone else thinking of panza dragoon the whole time?
