Forums - Sony - Sony Talks 2010: "Project Natal and Wii are going to have trouble"

^Because they don't understand what Nintendo did that made WIi a success

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

"I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games. Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they're areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint"

I think they've sealed their own fate. The reason why the Wii and DS sell more than the other consoles is because they were different. Copying what the Wii does best is...not wise.

why?

Because ripoffs of big names don't work. The casuals were on the Wii since 3 years ago.

if they can sell it to more cacusal players they won't care.

Nope, what Nintendo did was create games and a system that appealed to the downmarket, consumers who were overshot by the offerings of Sony and MS, who target the upmarket, just attaching motion controls without understanding the wants of the downmarket is a recipe for failure

You can't sell it to consumers if you don't understand their desires

The casuals have moved on, they aren't gonna replicate Nintendo's success, let alone exceed it.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

No, his comments prove he doesn't he thinks the holy grail is putting people into the game, when that's not what the downmarket wants, the downmarket isn't looking for immersive epics that suck you in
