Forums - PC - Help needed in choosing a Nvidia video card...

I have always been an ATI guy and know their product line like the back of my hand. However due to Nvidia 3d Vision kit that I have, I have to choose a Nvidia card.

Right now one of my computers has a 8800 GS. its kinda crap to be honest. It works for 3D movies and some games in 3d but it wont run crysis without ice packs...

Below are cards that I can purchase which are compatible with the 3D glasses:

GeForce 9800

GeForce 9600

GeForce 8800

GeForce GTX 280

GeForce GTX 260

Quadro FX 570

Quadro FX 560

First of all can someone help me understand what that GT vs GS vs GTS on the end of each card is? Which is best?  Also howmuch am I expected to pay for these badboys? Performance vs price ratio is key... Things like if 9800 GT is 100 bucks and 15% worse than GTX 280 which is 200...etc.

Any help is appreciated.

If you're doing 3D, you'll want to spend as much as you can, probably, I think it essentially halves framerates.

So go for a GTX 285 or something, I suppose... idk.

Yeah, tell me about it.

I really shot myself in the foot last christmas when I upgraded my videocard to Radeon 4850. Great videocard, but doesnt work with Nvidia's glasses.

After I got the glasses I switched back to my 8800...

I got a 4850 sitting in a machine used as household a media center...what a waste.

Heh.

Well, if you want price/performance, just know that you aren't gonna get it with Nvidia, more than likely.

if you could wait Nvidias new generation cards should be out sometime soon you know the ones with DX11 support etc, I suggest putting off the purchase until then if you can wait.

yeah, id wait but I m not getting top tier cards. That chart helped me understand Nvidias range...so I think Im shooting for GTS250 or GTS260 tops. I know howmuch ATI ones of same level cost and thats the budget I have to spend.

GTS cards are basically rebranded 9800gtx cards

Go for something in the GTX 2xx range for use with 3d glasses

That chart's a little outdated, here's December's: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-310-5970,2491-7.html

Nothing's really changed in the Nvidia side, though.
