Forums - Gaming Discussion - Halo: Reach Graphics Engine - Is it all that it's cracked up to be?

Now before starting, I just wanna say that unlike many of you, I really liked the Reach trailer and I might just buy a 360 for it. But as far as I can remember, Bungie has been hyping up Halo: Reach's graphics, by making bold statements such as the game will look equal to or better than Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 (see source: http://shabz666.wordpress.com/2009/07/16/aaron-greenberg-on-halo-reach/ ). But from what I saw, the trailer (which was shot with the Reach engine) looked great and might just be the best looking 360 game since GoW2, however, it pales in comparison to Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2. Anyone agree with me, or am I just plain wrong here?

It's Aaron Greenburg who's been hyping up this game not Bungie. Bungie's not like Greenburg, trying to hype shit up and diss other competitors.

And I'm sure Bungie only released something of an old build of Reach not an up to date build of Reach and yes I agree with you that currently it's got nothing on Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 graphics but then again it's unfair to compare old build stuff to fully finished and polished games.

So maybe when Bungie decides to release real up to date build screens and trailers of Halo Reach, that's when you can really decide whether Reach is on par (but not exceed) with Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 or Uncharted 2.

I haven't seen anything yet ...that trailer shows nothing.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

no!

that trailer doesn't look like the best 360 game, infact there is aloooooooooottt of better looking 360 games out there namely Mass Effect (which alot of people tend to ignore when they compare graphics)

- Wasteland - The Mission.

What are you people doing? Are you seriously trying to make a graphics comparison between HD games that are already out on the market with a trailer from a game that has a year to go before its release?

Somehow I think that is an unfair comparison.

Regardless, I personally thought the graphics looked great, but I will not be so naive as to begin comparing it pixel-for-pixel with other games that are out.

Don't listen to Aaron Greenburg. If the game is going to have split screen co-op and large, open environments it isn't going to have the best technical graphics, simple as that. I'm far more interested in the gameplay itself and promise of gigantic, epic battles than how shiny it looks.

The trailer didnt impress me to the max but it was good nonetheless also I'll w8 for a proper gameplay footage before I pass judgement. Right now tho Conviction and ME2 are the games on the 3600 side that is getting my attention!!!!!

Bungie halo games will always look great but not the best in the business. This is because Bungie places more importance on split screen co-op, multiplayer and large enviroments than graphics. I hope they keep 4 player online multiplayer on one console!

My Eyes!!! The Goggles Do Nothing!!!

a little comparison:

Halo Reach realtime ingame engine:

Halo 3 cut scene: (the halo 3 sceen is fake though, because Halo 3s resolution is way lower! it may be CGI)

anyway, Halo Reachs ingame engine looks like cgi in comparison to Halo 3. the good thing is, its confirmed to be realtime!

Couldn't have said it better.

I actually think Halo 3 looks rather good considering all that's going on. I mean... when you play Firefight on a map like Last Resort and you have 2-3 Brute Choppers, a couple of Ghosts and Wraiths, 5-10 packs of Brutes with Grunts, Snipers, and guys on turrets while 4 guys are blowing stuff up left and right and there are no slow downs it really does show that although not being a graphical masterpiece it's still a technical showcase. (run on much?)

As for the trailer - It looks really good. The lighting and dust effects are there and the textures are decent on the characters but there's still a ton of time left for this to be improved. I guess we'll just wait and see. I'm looking forward to game modes and gameplay mechanics more than anything.

Oh and I forgot... The Elites are back as the main enemy. That alone has me fully excited.
