Forums - Sony - Why Sony Cut Backwards Compatibility

Just curious, how long are the folks who own a PS3 going to ignore the posts of those who are actually waiting to buy a PS3? If you own one already you were willing to jump in much earlier than everyone else which means your priorities have already been established to be much different than someone who is waiting.

Folks like Naznatips and myself aren't here just posting what we want out of a PS3 to piss people off we are actual consumers with legit concerns that are constantly disregarded by the folks who already have a PS3 but are apparently to blind to realize that they have a completely different view of what level of value a PS3 needs to be at to be worthwhile. Thats great for you, you have a PS3 and you're happy with it. But we expect more out of it and just because you don't/didn't doesn't make our concern any less valid.

BC matters to many of the people who have not purchased yet. This idea that it is a non-issue and that people should just buy a PS3 now because its "good enough" is beyond ridiculous. As a PS3 owner you should want people to feel like they are getting a great deal when they purchase, and the criteria for that is their opinion of a great deal not yours. People shouldn't have to justify their purchase in retrospect, they should be happy with the product because it is a good product purchased at a good value and for many people the lack of BC means that even at $300 the PS3 is not a good value. Some of you just scoffed at your computer screens...admit it! But its the truth. Some want to be able to upscale their PS2 games, some want to preserve space around the TV, some don't have a PS2, some just like the convenience, and still others want all of those things.

So enough of this idea that somehow someone who already owns a PS3 has more insight into how a more cautious consumer is thinking than that consumer himself/herself. You don't, you are on the other end of the spectrum.

i definitely see your point, but you must realize that everyone here is in the minority of consumers. most probably don't know that it lacks backwards compatibility or even what that term means. it's not like it's explained on the box somewhere. i'm sorry, but if BC is important to you, spend the extra cash... or don't... or wait, pretty simple. it seems like no one even gives them credit for having dropped the price $200 in under a year, they are trying to make it more affordable, but all you guys see is the negative. BTW, if i could've got my PS3 with no BC for $300, i would've gladly traded in ALL my PS2 games the same day. they just sit on my shelves anyways.

Well, maybe we are just a small part of the market, but why the sales of the 80Gb and 60Gb boosted up with the launch of the 40Gb, are you sure that most of the people dont care about BC???

And, 200 price drop in the first year is not by any means something to be rewarder when they launched the console at $600... if the sales of the first 60Gb model were like the Wii ones... price cut my @ss

Maybe because the biggest shopping season is just starting up and it's a well known fact that the buying public wants the "premium" unit?

*looks at the calendar* Yup, it's November 4th.  And I said, just starting up, along with people wanting the "premium" version.  Where was that unclear?

And?  Not everyone waits until mid-November to shop.  There are people I know that already have their shopping done.  Not only that, but you put out the idea that there was a price drop, people know that there will likely not be one for a while, especially before Christmas.  You can also figure that some people will assume that the 60/80 will be out of stock when they go to buy them nearer to Christmas.

Come on, the sales are there long before a Holiday... if there was a price cut, why only the BC models are the ones selling out??? You can't assume that all the people buying the BC models are simply early holidays buyers, man, that idea is simply ridiculous, but hey, you can spin it whatever you want if that makes you happy...

They could have made the 40GB PS3 backwards compatible if they wanted to. It honestly would not have cost them that much.  They had the software emulation ready to go. My theory is that the guys in charge realized that they're still making a nice chunk of change from PS2 sales, and it would be retarded to eliminate that market completely. If more PS3s get sold with BC, less PS2s will be sold. Pretty simple. That would be a bad financial move on Sony's part, especially considering that they're selling more PS2s some places than they are PS3s. They'll still be selling PS2 3 years from now, it's free money.

Because they chose to. Duh

Edit: I'm answering the topic question.

@Vizunary,

I agree that those are my options and I have already chosen to wait it out.

And I will add to my previous comments that I am not saying that folks can't debate the impact of this stuff I am just really tired of posts saying "its a non-issue". It absolutely is an issue and anyone who says it isn't is either in denial or incapable of viewing things from another perspective.

And as I said earlier in the thread I believe that they plan to bring full BC back to a new SKU in the future and I am willing to wait till then. Should they choose not to bring it back then I will likely wait until the PS3 is under $200 at retailers to purchase it. Or if that takes too long perhaps even wait until next gen and get in early with the money I will have saved up / set aside by then from not buying a PS3 & games etc...

I don't think many people are as extreme as I am but thats truly how I look at it. I will not reward Sony for a move like this if their intentions are not to offer it again. My logic is that if they will turn on me with the PS2 and the games I purchased for it then I will not fall for it again. "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me." etc... And I have entertainment from many places from my Wii and my PC for gaming to my TiVo to DVDs and even several books I haven't read. I have no lack of things to do with my free time.

Hopefully people can see where I am coming from even if they don't agree with it.
