Forums - Gaming - Will a company out there ever deliver an ultimate portable device?

lol he listed bluetooth wifi and Rf frequency,
first of all wifi technically only specifies 802.11b which is RF

disolitude, I have been dreaming up the idea of the ultimate portable device myself as well. If I was rich, I'd totally be interested in making something like this a reality.

Btw are you talking $600 without a plan or with a plan? Big difference. (unless by phone functionality you mean VoIP like Skype and what not)

Here are some features I was also thinking about...
- 2 triggers to each side (like a Dualshock controller). It sucks how the PSP only has 1 on each side because there are lots of PS1 games that make use of all four triggers. It'll make the thing thicker to accomodate the extra triggers but it should still be able to fit in your pocket.
- Full QWERTY thumb keyboard add-on attachment (sold seperately of course). The on-screen keyboards on iPod Touch/iPhone can't beat Blackberry. Since the thing will be a slider design, you can make the "gamepad" portion removeable so that you can replace it with the QWERTY keyboard if you want
- native XviD and MKV support
- native OGG, FLAC and support for other free audio codecs.
- PDA-like functions and basically all these minor features that are standard with iPod Touch/Zune HD/Archos/etc.
- Make sure the memory card expansion uses cheap media. Magic Stick is expensive (though I know they sell microSD/SD to Memory Stick Adapters on the cheap in China). microSD/SD is more consumer friendly.
- Allow linux install to encourage homebrew. I want pr0n games on this thing. I hate how these console dictators (Nintendo, MS, Sony) won't let third-parties develop Ao games on their platforms. Screw that. I want eroge on the go. I want eroge on home consoles too (Why call it a Xbox if there is no X-rated content?). Not just on my PC.
- That motion tilt technology that Zune HD has (ie. you can tilt your Zune HD to make turns with your car in PGR. I thought that was pretty neat)

hehe, some sweet ideas you got there.

Id be hoping to be 600 dollars without a plan. I mean, IF MS can sell me a 16 GB Zune with touch screen, 720p output and other cool stuff for 200 bucks...having another 400 bucks to work with should take care of the rest

Keyboard attachment could be pushing it. I was all for keyboards until I tried Iphone. SMS messaging on that device is so easy. Keyboard is still better but not by much.

all those video and audio codecs would have to be up to 3rd party developers I think. a 3rd pary VLC app ported to this device should do the trick for video

Also homebrew is a must. This is why I commend Iphone over PSP. PSP can do emulators and some homebrew but is still rather limited. Iphone homebrew is just insane... I donèt know about porn games tho. Nude Raider...lol

All in all, looks like they would sell 2 of these devices on these forums alone. :)

Thanks for educating me on this...no need to redicule though. So you are telling me that a Wifi enabled device should be able to open garages, car doors etc...with the right software-programming?

Sounds like an Apple 3G S. This Phone has everything what you mentioned except of the physical buttons and Dual Analog sticks. Which could be done with a Slide mechanic. I waited for this Iphone Addon with Physical Buttons for 2 years. But somehow noone is releasing such a thing.

Your Idea is not very far away from reality. And will be done for sure and even a lot better.

I think in 10 years we will see an Gaming device with Full HD and Build in beamer and everything you mentioned.

The PSP2 rumored specs seem to indicate a PSP2 with half the Xbox360 power.

But Sony always putted in their consoles a lot of technology. But Nintendo did the oposite. A Device like that depends heavily on the games it has. And the price. Your ideas would probably fail. In 2005-2006 there was this Handheld with GPS better Graphics then PSP Internet and a lot more. I forgot the name, the CEO made a crash with his Ferrari and splitted it up. And something was going on with Swedish Mafia I just dont know how its called but it was 500 or 600 Dollar too and failed horribly. Sony would never release a Console for this price again and for sure no Handheld.

The technology you mentioned is not as expensive as it used to be. Nokia makes such All in One things a long time. I remember playing Tomb Raider 1 on the first Symbian S60 phone was probably 2002.

I dont believe that people want to pay this much for a Handheld.

I believe it was called Gizmondo. Its killer app game was called Sticky Balls :)

It wasnt more powerful than PSP though.

I think Iphone 3GS is as close as PSP go to my dream. Both are like parallel strands of research...that need to be combined.

Sonys game development strategy and gaming library along with device buttons + Iphones touchscreen, phone and homebrew apps = this device

iPhone/iPod Touch is ace for homebrew (you have to jailbreak it though). I was thinking that this hypothetical device should have official homebrew support though (ie. allow the end-user to install Linux on it like the PS3 does). Thing is, I've never used Linux on the PS3 so I don't know how that works out. Is there a homebrew scene for PS3 Linux? I know the Game Park handhelds come with Linux installed out of the box and Pandora will too but these are for the most part purely homebrew devices. They aren't closed platforms like a console or handheld console.

As for QWERTY keyboard attachment, like I said that should be an add-on sold seperately. Because not everyone wants one (I do).
