Forums - Gaming - Will a company out there ever deliver an ultimate portable device?

This portable device is not going to happen. Mainstream consumers will not buy it nor will they be interested in the features.

However, I would suggest you get an investment team together and pitch your idea. You just may end up being a CEO of your own company that creates the Ultimate portable, the Ultimate 1000. Of course you'd have to get gameloft and popcap to develop games for portable. Hopefully, I've put you on a path for success.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

Christ, disolitude, while you're at it why don't you ask for the ability to shoot lasers and fly?

lol...pretty smart reply. I am emailing Samsung as I am writing this.

The thing is...these features have been available already, however not all in the same phone- device.

PSP Go has the slide screen covering the controls, Zune HD has 720p output, Gizmondo had the GPS...touch screen, camera, browser, multimedia its all there on other devices.

Also, Iphone was not a cheap device when it came out...400 bucks with a plan and it sold like hotcakes. So if the features are right people will pay...

Worst case scenario, a company like sony could make PSP2 as they normally would...for 299 with most features, and then offer the ULTIMATE 1000 PSP2 for nutjobs like me. Harmonix has a drum set for 400 bucks for Rockband. If there are people dumb enough to buy that, this device should fly off the shelf.

Sounds like you want a PSP2 and not really waiting for the ultimate game machine. Just Sonys next offering.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Is there anything Im missing that a portable gaming machine/multimedia device/phone should do?

Things like good battery life and online network are implied. Id love to connect to PSN or xbox live using 3G and play online while I am on the bus.

What else is there...a built in projector? lol

Then I would pay $600 for it for sure. And mount it to a shark's head.

disolitude, I have been dreaming up the idea of the ultimate portable device myself as well. If I was rich, I'd totally be interested in making something like this a reality.

Btw are you talking $600 without a plan or with a plan? Big difference. (unless by phone functionality you mean VoIP like Skype and what not)

Here are some features I was also thinking about...
- 2 triggers to each side (like a Dualshock controller). It sucks how the PSP only has 1 on each side because there are lots of PS1 games that make use of all four triggers. It'll make the thing thicker to accomodate the extra triggers but it should still be able to fit in your pocket.
- Full QWERTY thumb keyboard add-on attachment (sold seperately of course). The on-screen keyboards on iPod Touch/iPhone can't beat Blackberry. Since the thing will be a slider design, you can make the "gamepad" portion removeable so that you can replace it with the QWERTY keyboard if you want
- native XviD and MKV support
- native OGG, FLAC and support for other free audio codecs.
- PDA-like functions and basically all these minor features that are standard with iPod Touch/Zune HD/Archos/etc.
- Make sure the memory card expansion uses cheap media. Magic Stick is expensive (though I know they sell microSD/SD to Memory Stick Adapters on the cheap in China). microSD/SD is more consumer friendly.
- Allow linux install to encourage homebrew. I want pr0n games on this thing. I hate how these console dictators (Nintendo, MS, Sony) won't let third-parties develop Ao games on their platforms. Screw that. I want eroge on the go. I want eroge on home consoles too (Why call it a Xbox if there is no X-rated content?). Not just on my PC.
- That motion tilt technology that Zune HD has (ie. you can tilt your Zune HD to make turns with your car in PGR. I thought that was pretty neat)

Sounds like an Apple 3G S. This Phone has everything what you mentioned except of the physical buttons and Dual Analog sticks. Which could be done with a Slide mechanic. I waited for this Iphone Addon with Physical Buttons for 2 years. But somehow noone is releasing such a thing.

Your Idea is not very far away from reality. And will be done for sure and even a lot better.

I think in 10 years we will see an Gaming device with Full HD and Build in beamer and everything you mentioned.

The PSP2 rumored specs seem to indicate a PSP2 with half the Xbox360 power.

But Sony always putted in their consoles a lot of technology. But Nintendo did the oposite. A Device like that depends heavily on the games it has. And the price. Your ideas would probably fail. In 2005-2006 there was this Handheld with GPS better Graphics then PSP Internet and a lot more. I forgot the name, the CEO made a crash with his Ferrari and splitted it up. And something was going on with Swedish Mafia I just dont know how its called but it was 500 or 600 Dollar too and failed horribly. Sony would never release a Console for this price again and for sure no Handheld.

The technology you mentioned is not as expensive as it used to be. Nokia makes such All in One things a long time. I remember playing Tomb Raider 1 on the first Symbian S60 phone was probably 2002.

I dont believe that people want to pay this much for a Handheld.

The ultimate portable will be a phone or a handheld computer that can use skype and/or google voice. And no it won't have carts or blueray-UMD. At most it will have an SD slot for expanded storage, but will rely solely on downloads to get games and other apps.

Trust me, thats where we are headed.

it sounds like the bastard child of the psp go and the ipod touch.
