Its that time again, when all phone contracts come to an end (well not all of them, but mine at least). Of course, I want an IPhone, but I don't want the service that comes with it... So I'm sticking with big V and want to know if anyone has the Droid. If you do, what do you like and dislike about it. Also, what apps would you recommend getting and do they stand up to what the IPhone has.
I do not own a Droid, but I'm a big user of the Android platform, and have owned an Android phone since late July (HTC Magic/MyTouch3G), so I can discuss a few things about the OS.
Handset wise, I've tried the Droid and it is pretty nice. Not as sleek as some other models, but the screen is pretty nice, and the form factor of the keyboard is pretty nice compared to something like the G1. Obviously, you want to try one before you buy, but the Droid is the show pony of the Android family, and the specs are pretty nice.
The AndroidOS is very nice. Although I haven't used a lot of other UIs extensively (tried BlackBerry and the iPhone a few times), the Android OS from a usability standpoint stands toe to toe with all of them. Loading times are not bad for apps, and switching between pages is seamless. The web browser is very nice, and even as a T-Mobile user I can browse the web pretty decently, even with EDGE. It doesn't have flash yet, but I believe that is coming soon.
The apps quite aren't up to the iPhone yet, but they are certainly more diverse than any other OS out there - Android has 20,000 applications now and is growing at a very fast pace. Most of your major apps found on the iPhone are on the Android. One BIG advantage of the AndroidOS is the Google Maps integration. I get free GPS, turn-by-turn navigation through my phone. The games, however, are much worse than what the iPhone has due to lack of major developers on the platform. I expect it to get much better in the future, but the vast majority of games are simple 2D games. There are a few very nice ones like Mystique and Robo Defense, so there are a few games that are worthwhile.
