Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy vs. Dragon Quest

Hmm... overall, I have to say Dragon Quest. I can break it down by game, which I've never actually done before. Let me see how that comes out:

1: FF. Sure, DQ1 (well, Dragon Warrior) was my first RPG, but the vast world of FF1 and the multitude of things to do on it makes it easily my favorite.

2: DQ. Eh, sorry, but I don't like how leveling went in FF2. And DQ2 at this point gave me my larger world and more party members. So that's easy.

3: DQ. So... let me get this straight- I get the customization of my characters IN the game? (At a cost, of course.) And there was this throwback to the old DQ. FF3 was decent, and I loved the job changes, but it was nothing compared to this.

4: DQ. This one was tough. Both are fantastic games. But the chapter setup in DQ made it feel more like a change in style. Whereas in FF, I'd like a character, and then poof, they go away. Sometimes the party setup I'd get in FF4 would not be one to my liking...

5: DQ. Shit, this one's even tougher. But I wanted my continuation of DQ4 and the Zenithia story! Besides, the class changing was done before for FF.

6: FF. Again, another one that was a bitch. But finally, some evil enemy gets what they want! (Kefka's destroying the world) The best FF easily (5 comes a close second), and it was still a tough pick.

7: DQ. Much easier now. While I feel DQ7 was a weak game (second only to 1), it still beats the sellout that was FF7. I blame FF7 for the downfall of the FF franchise. DQ didn't forget what made it good.

8: DQ. Easiest pick yet. FF8 might have a chance against crap on a platter, but even then, I might still pick said crap. The only good thing I can say about FF8 is that they tried new things. Shame that almost all of them failed. DQ8 gave me a few other things to do also that didn't completely bomb.

9: Judgment reserved. I like FF9, and it gave me the best RPG mini-game, but the game still had quite a few big flaws from the FF7 sellout. Having not played DQ9, I'll wait until I do, though I am reserved about the more actiony aspect of it...

I'm not really sure which to pick. I like both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, but I guess I will go with Dragon Quest.
