Forums - General - Looking to buy a receiver but don't know which one to get

I know I need a new receiver because my current one doesn't do 1080p, only 1080i which means I have a whole mess of wires running to my TV and receiver and I just don't like that.

I have a Harmon Kardon right now and I like it and if those are good I would like to get another one since I also have the iPod accessory for it.

So I guess what I'm looking for is:

  • Not too expensive, nothing more than $800 or so but the cheaper the better
  • 7.1 audio -- even though I don't 7.1, I would like support for it in case I feel like upgrading.  If this makes the receiver too expensive, I can not get it though.
  • 1080p
  • lots of HDMI inputs along with at least 1 component input for my Wii
  • Harmon Kardon if they're good since I have the iPod accessory for it but this one isn't necessary
  • Nothing taller than 6.5 inches

I don't think I need the upscaler and don't those just make receivers really expensive?  The main thing is I want one that's 1080p and won't crap out on me (I've had one crap out on me vefore but I forgot the brand).

Nobody knows anything about receivers? ;_;

I don't know how helpful this will be since a) I don't know if you have different receivers available there than here in the UK and b) Who knows how big an inch is!

However:

This is what I have: http://whathifi.com/Review/Yamaha-DSP-AX763/

Now although this particular model is no good for you due to it only having 2 HDMI inputs I have been extremely pleased with it so I would definitively recommend purchasing a Yamaha.

Alternatively, how about

 or

Both supposed to be excellent receivers!

What's the rest of your setup?

Hmm, those two above are just barely too tall (they're 17cm and and I can't fit more than 16.5). I might be able to squeeze 17 in there but I want the receiver to have at least a little room to breathe. :-/

I started looking at this one and I assume it's good. I currently have a Harmon Kardon and it's good I think.

Also, inch to centimeter converter

-edit-

setup is:

  • Cable box/DVR (HDMI)
  • PS3 (HDMI)
  • Xbox 360 (HDMI)
  • Wii (Component, or whichever one has 5 connections, forget what it's called)
  • iPod connecter (Bridge)
  • 5.1 speakers, though the base isn't working for some odd reason...

they look nice some of those,

so do you say reciever where we say amplifier...

or are recievers just real fancy amps

i think i'd like one with hdmi's and things...

I've been extremely happy with my Harmon Kardon receiver. I bought it a little over two years ago.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I have a Harmon/Kardon AVR-146 and am very happy with it. Right now, they have the AVR-254 which does HD audio for like $500.
