Well, when buying any kind of eletronical device we know that we some time there will be another one. Be glad that with console gaming this time is 6-7 years. And HDTV sets that are updated yearly?

Be prepared for many headbashing against the wall moments. Programming is extremely frustrating. Enjoy spending countless hours searching for bugs in your code only to realize you created an infinite loop.
As for going into gaming, ouch, even worse. You may think it will be enjoyable but honestly I have heard from countless programmers that say it is far more frustrating than satisfying. As for the prestige, as someone graduating in less than a year, I applaud what they can do these days with games; it is astonishing.
