Forums - Sony - Sony chooses IBM POWER 7 CPU for PlayStation 4

24-32 MB L3 Chache ? Wow. 10 times more power. Easier development. Sounds great.

I am glad to see that Sony didnt go the Wii way. What will the Xbox 720 offer. I am really excited about the Next Gen.

Hopefully the PS4 will be sold at 399. So more people can buy it. September-December 2012 is the perfect time to release a new console.

How will the graphics be then. Probably the ugliest game will be on Uncharted 2 Level (1080p). And 1080p will be standard in every game. And Crysis on Ultrahigh will look dated. But i think after the PS4 the graphics will be almost perfect.

After the HD Consoles launched I thought that the Graphics cant be much better anymore but after a while I found a lot room for improvment. So I think we will see a huge step. WIth Millions of details on a screen without Tearing without framerate issues with thousends of objects moving on the screen and great physics.

I wonder if they could Include the Cell just for Physics/KI. That would secure BC and it would be a great thing for the games. And this would improve the Graphics too because the CPU/GPU would have no other purpose.

Ofcours tis is just a rumor yet I would buy a PS4 with PowerVR and Power7. Both news are from the Netherlands. Maybe they really know something.

Its fun to speculate and all, but this is still a rumor, POWER 7 CPU has some of the CELL in there (IBM is using some of its best development results in its latest CPU's architectures, so there is some CELL in there too), and all in all, I will wait for true specs in about a year time, or at leat some leak from devs working on it (PS4 games or even Sony ' I leak like a old boat' type of we dont comment on rumors).

you are kinda wrong there the CELL has some Power parts and ofcorse IBM will use anything good they have developed but the achitecture is compleatly diferent and much better IMO.

CELL was made with POWER tech in it, its true, and now IBM stoped developing into POWERXCELL8i (I think...) tech, but it will still use some of its developed tech that they came with, thats what I meant. Some, if not a lot, of what was developed during CELL research and development will be in use in future IBM architectures, such as POWER7 and wahtever else comes later. THe completely different you say may mean they will implement and go further into into, making it easier to use. When the CELL came out, just a few CPUs were using more than 2 cores, now look, we have pretty much ewvery one using more than that. Its evolution, and now the devs have tools to use it properly.

ok I get you but the CELL in my opinion wasn't a true multicore CPU it was one traditional core with 8 synergistic elements which is way the CELL was so hard to program for.

Parallel processing is huge in computers nowadays. It's all about pipelining and spreading work out among multiple processors for efficiency. Does not matter if it wasn't a true multicore as it is used as one unless you're a shitty developer that doesn't feel like ultilizing this important aspect of the CELL architecture. Also, no one cares for your opinion as you obviously do not understand why the cell is such a sophisticated idea.

i hope the next consoles won't be released till at least 2013.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

wow i'm confused!

After your rasoning, all ibm cpu's created after cell, are cells too. Including xenon, the x360 cpu.

After reading the power7 specs, i came to the conclusion, the power 7 is more of a sucessor to the x360 cpu, cause it's lacking all cell typicall features, like SPE's.

But you could argue, the power7 won't won't incorporate any cell elemensts, cause it was deemed a failiure. This alone makes it the real cell successor. Lessons's learned!

weren't ppl on here some weeks ago rediculing the idea of a new xbox console...and that microsoft would be crazy to release a new console 2010-2011. Ohhhh now i get it, the emperical rule in these forums is sony iz god....everything else nil.

I guess sanity really is majority rules.

I don't recall that, but 2010-2011 is a bit early since Microsoft also said the 360 would have a 10 year cycle. 2012 isn't too bad because most consoles last around 6 years anyway. I know the 360 came out in 2005 also, but to release a new system in 2010-2011 is definately still too early. 2012 is a bit early too for Sony.

It will depend...of Microsoft

You can bet that next gen, Sony will not let Microsoft start with a 1 year lead

But does anyone think about poor developers, who have learned to do miracles on cell and after this gen that knowledge will be nothing but burden? Stupid valve didn't waste their time with cell. ;)

@blablubb
Cell and xenon goes under power, but they are different branches of development.

Now arriving on next gen, next stop is 2010.

Same and if they do at least they'll probably get delayed
