Because the PS3 includes a bluray player, wifi, adapter and free online gaming. To get all that with an elite you need to: buy a standalone bluray player for $100-150+, Wifi adapter $100, and a year of XBL gold $50. That around 200 extra bucks. Starting to make sense to you? |
While I'm not sure that Wi-Fi and PSN are that big of selling points to the casual user (moreso to the hardcore though), the inclusion of Blu-Ray is a coup for the PS3, as it is offered at the same price as the Elite.
Let's be honest though, how could it NOT have an advantage? Minimal differences in visual fidelity aside, the PS3 and 360 share a large library of multiplatform games. If your budget is $300, you can get an Elite, or the PS3 (with the included Blu-Ray player)...if the PS3 doesn't outsell the 360 with that value proposition they are in deep, deep trouble.
Obviously however, they will.

The funny thing is that it would make Sony go bankrupt. :)
And let's not forget that launch price for PS3 is in everyone minds. When they see the $299 price tag : OMG!
And i think PS3 was the most expensive console of all time that had sold more than 20 millions units. Now that it is cheaper by the standards, sales will skyrocket.

The funny thing is how someone could state something like that. Sony is huge. If they lose money it is because they can afford it. Short term gains are nothing to these powerful companies. They are thinking about the future, not about gaining money tomorrow morning.Read Peter M. Senge - The Fifth Discipline. Sony, like Microsoft and Nintendo are learning organizations. Think only about short term profits and you are doomed.

I think he was referring to the fact that every Slim sold is still resulting in a loss. Let's say it's $25 per console so 1.2 billion X $25 = $30 billion loss. Can Sony absorb that? I read "Basic Math 101" by any random mathmatician for that info.
You'd be surprised how accurate this thing is. Yesterday I sold 4 PS3s, 2 Wiis and 0 360s. I had a bunch of parents coming in to buy a console for their children and asked the difference between the Arcade, Elites and PS3s. A lot of them thinks MS is ripping people off on the price point for their accessories, and truthfully I can't say that I don't agree. Customers are a lot more informed then we all think and when it comes to spending hundreds of dollars they want more bang for their buck. Oddly enough we sold a shit load of Ratchet and Clanks yesterday as well. And I only saw one dude walk out with Uncharted 2. He also bought DJ Hero renegade edition

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.
Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

LOL
If they were producing ps3s on that scale though they would be less to make because of mass manurfacturing. XD
